JWaldz '99 Adventure Build - Dual Locked | Geared | Mid-Travel | 35s | Armored

Here's a couple pics infamousRNR

You can see where it hits on the top of the slider. If I pick the door up while I pull it open it won't hit. But, like I said I'm pretty sure all this has been resolved b/c he lowered the angle of the sliders.

Killin' it.

Just wanna say one of the best 3G builds I have seen. AN INSPIRATION! Keep up the good work! I saw you sold your CBI rear bumper, what did you replace it with?

Alrighty folks, here's a rather large and involved update, so bear with me..

I know I haven't posted much with my 4Runner in a while. She has been garage ridden for the past 7-ish months due to the motor blowing a head gasket :( Unfortunately, this happened at a very inconveniencing time, as my wife and I were only a few months away from our first child's birth. All spare funds were on hold and being saved. Therefor, she's been sitting.

Skip to 6-7 months later, we have a healthy 4 month old baby girl and we couldn't be happier. However, the 4Runner had been on the back burner as I slowly bought parts, tools, and lastly, try to source a decent mileage engine to replace mine.

Now begins the engine journey that has been a nightmare (don't worry, there's a happy ending).

Engine 1
I bought a $1300 engine with around 112k on it from Central Auto in Denver, CO. First, let me start off by saying that Central Auto is a good reputable company and they worked with me every step of the way. Now, after taking a full day off work, renting a trailer and making the 4 hour round trip drive through Denver traffic to go get the engine, I get home with it and begin unwrapping and breaking it down. Immediately I find rust ALL OVER this thing. I began to get skeptical. I yanked the intake plenums and spark plugs. Low and behold, there's a shit ton of water in this engine. After back and forth for 3 or 4 days with Central Auto hoping they would come get this thing, they refused and here I was with quite literally a boat anchor. So, I take yet another day off from work, rent another trailer, and make the drive all over again. Thankfully a full refund was issued, but I was out nearly $150 between gas and trailer rent costs.

Engine 2
Weeks pass as I try to source another engine and I finally find another from a reputable junk yard, yet again in Denver, Jims Yota Yard. The $1100 engine had 122k on it and they agreed to bring it to me. SOLD! They bring it to me and I'm ecstatic. It's clean and looks to be in great shape. I get it unloaded and they take off. I get it up on the engine hoist and ready to work on, when I see a timing belt replacement sticker on the front cover. Why I didn't see this sooner I don't know. My stomach immediately drops as I'm looking at 300,xxx mileage written on the sticker :nono: I immediately make the phone call. Long story short, another couple weeks pass as the source me another engine to bring to swap out the one they originally brought...

Engine 3
Now this brings us to current time. Over this past weekend they bring me the new engine. This one has 144k on it but not a deal breaker. Make an even swap, unload and load. Engine appears to look great, no timing belt service sticker this time haha. Compression feels good, nice and clean under valve covers and throughout, and to top it off it appears to have just had a timing belt service with all Toyota parts so no need to do it right now. I'm a happy camper.

Plans so far include: valve cover gasket job, new rear main seal, new plugs, new wires, new radiator, custom powdercoat valve covers and intake manifolds, new motor mounts, and overall grease and wiring cleanup in the engine bay.

The old engine is essentially ready to pull. I ran into a bit of a hiccup with the exhaust flange blots and stripped one. Now, I have to cut it off. Once it's off, I can pull the engine! Estimating full completion by the end of the month!

No JDM with 40k or less?

I went back and forth about 100 times on that option haha. I didn't want to deal with questioning whether or not the engine would have been a flooded engine (despite getting one anyways) and I also didn't want to convert a JDM engine over to work with a US truck. In the end I wanted to find something local with lowish miles.

I did a thing.... :bounce:

I decided while I had some downtime getting more parts, I'd shoot the valve covers and intakes over to powder coat to make this engine a little more unique. If only I had a supercharger to sit on top.

Colors:

Valve Covers - Copper Vein
Intakes - Black Wrinkle Semi-Gloss

It's been a while since I've done any kind of update on here. I'll break this up in 2 posts.

As seen above, I decided to do some custom touches to the new engine going into the 4Runner. I got all the parts I needed in addition to some upgrades to finish the job and have now been driving it for around 4 months now. My (2nd) oem radiator decided to split somewhere at the top. So I decided to not have to go through another Radiator ever again (hopefully) and went with the Champion Aluminum 3 Row. It really is a work of art. After getting everything swapped in and ready to go, I come to find out the battery was dead. We jumped my current DieHard Platinum to get it to crank over for the 1st time and it did so without a single problem, WOO!! What a relief. Ordered a Odyssey Extreme Group 35 and got it within a couple days. I was finally back on the road!!

Champion Radiator Thoughts
There is some minor modification required for this supposedly drop in radiator. The mounting holes don't line up perfectly. This can easily be remedied by step drilling out the mounting holes on the truck. Don't rely on the 'hooks' to hold up the radiator in place because they literally are bent all wacky and don't line up. Have someone help you. Otherwise, it's a very straight forward install. The radiator has a built in trans cooler or you can reroute to an external if you have one.

Temps- As I've been monitoring my temps through my ScanGauge for the past few months, I've come to the conclusion that with this radiator, you can expect to see an average temp of 185. I rarely see anything above 190, even under load. Keep in mind, this also depends on your engine's response to cooling. All engine conditions are different, especially with being around a 20 year old vehicle. Upkeep is crucial to extended life expectancy.

Forward to recent

I somehow luckily acquired a slightly used CBI Rear Plate bumper for a great price. As some of you know, I've had a CBI before and didn't like the design of the single arm with the old "auger screw" style latching style. The bounce I got from it was horrendous. I sold it a few years back to fund some other runner projects. This bumper, however, has all the most recent updates and is also DUAL SWING! I love it. Awaiting the RotoPax mounts.

Additional updates coming!!

Loving the black wrinkle paint my dude! the wrinkle black is exactly what i will do when i paint on these engine components... the Copper vein is something i never thought about though and I'm totally digging it. nice work. it always feels good to get something done on your rig when it's been neglected for a while.

Thanks man. I'm really loving how they came out on the truck. Was down for over a year! On the plus side, I drove a 5th gen runner every day lol.

Nice color choices, so pretty. Glad your 3rd engine worked out...wow, that's a lot of work to get a decent one. Good thing you were paying attention.

Also congrats on your little person!

Decided to hop on the ARB 'Clone' Snorkel train!

I ordered on a late Friday night, Jan 25th and, to my surprise, it arrived 4 days later... FROM MALAYSIA....

The install of the snorkel itself is fairly simple. The template was pretty spot on for me. The hard part is getting the tubing, that is supplied, onto the snorkel and the intake tube. The diameter of the rubber hose is 'generously' smaller than that of it's male end counterparts. Maybe it was just mine as I haven't seen too many people complain about it. Anyways, after a long battle of cursing, drinking, and more cursing I got it all assembled. Along the way, I made the decision to not fight my power antenna and just replaced it with the Tacoma whip antenna. Overall, great weekend of working on the runner!
