K&N Intakes

K&N has 2 intakes for the V8 4th Gen 4Runners. Can someone explain the difference?

They are pretty much similar except for one kit uses a metal intake tube which will absorb engine heat and defeat the "cold air" benefit.The other kit uses plastic and does'nt absorb so much engine heat.IMO both kits still inhale warm air since the filter is not completely away from radiant engine heat like your stock air box that sucks cool air from inside the fenderwell.:biggrin2:
 
IMO, whether it is the powder coated tube or plastic, they're both going to perform about the same. The R-factor of the powder coated aluminum vs. the thinner plastic tube are going to be about equal since any warm air can heat up the plastic faster since it is less dense and has less mass. Takes longer to heat up the metal one since its density and mass are higher (given a linear/constant rate of absorption over linear time at any specific given temparture). Given enough time at equal under-hood tempartures, they will function relatively equally. The plastic tube with get warmer quicker, but they should both end up at around the same temp if you are on a longer run. (Technically, everything under the hood, short of the radiator and exhuast manifolds, should all end up at or about the same temp if the engine is run for long enough time.

If plastic had a superior F-factor compared to metal, we'd have plastic house doors - when most exterior doors today are indeed metal (sandwiched around polystyrene/styrofoam).

The ideal solution would be to get the metal tube, ceramic coat it (ala JetHot or similar) inside and out, and run it to the cooler air source, which I guess is the stock air box. Ceramic coating would keep the intake charge at the ambient since it takes hundreds if not a thousand degrees to transfer enough heat through the walls to affect the air flowing through it. I ceramic coat the exhaust headers on my race car - and it works so well on those that you can nearly lay a bare hand on them within 5 minutes of a run. The differences in the EGT readings when we pull it on the dyno are very noticeable between ceramicoated vs non-coated.

Now I'm wondering if there is any advantage to having a 3rd party intake. Is there any mileage advantage over the stock intake? Would it solve (or help with) the sulfur smell?

Not to sure about the sulfur smell you are experiencing.Sounds like the cats are going bad.
 
I have the plastic version. It's supposed to make more power because it's shaped to enhance airflow- where aluminum tube is just that... tube. Plus it insulates a bit better. K&N lists dyno charts for the toyota with both engines. I think it was +11hp for the V-8, but I can't remember. I got it for one reason- SOUND. It sounds awesome when floored. Love V-8's. On a V-6, not sure how it'll sound there.

I recommend it.

Note that the air filter is sealed from the engine compartment and pulls air from the fender like the stock one does.

Not really. With my lift and tires I dropped from 18mpg real world to 15-16mpg.

With the intake and magnaflow exhaust, it sounds like a stock car when you go wide open throttle. People look around to find out what car is making the noise!
