K&N Series 77 Intake

Well I installed my K&N Cold Air Intake today first off the intake tube was scratched up pretty bad no damage to the box but the tube was scratched on the bottom so I figured what the hell no one will see it anyway. So I continued on with the install took about 30 to 40 min and I have to say I am not impressed the fitment was not very good at all the metal heat shield and L brackets had to be forced into place which wasn't fun and the actual intake tube was resting on a wire loom on the valve cover. I continued to mess with it to make it fit better drove it around sounded good performance was pretty good gas mileage went down because I wanted to punch all the time lol. Long story short I am returning it and I put the stock airbox back. In my personal opinion this intake is not to good I had a similar one from K&N on my 04 SR5 fit much better. I am going to wait and see what TRD comes out with and purchase that one I hope this helps. I have a few pictures of it install it was on for about 45min of driving and took it off. I have installed intakes on several other cars to include my wifes old Honda and my friends Tahoe so this isn't a lack of experience with the install. Sorry for the long post.

Bummer man...........I hear ya on the fitment though, especially with a CAI. You shouldn't have to force "anything" to make it fit right. I'm sure TRD will come out with something.......it just may take a year or ten to get like the rest of the TRD parts we are still waiting for them to create :cry2:

Yeah huge bummer I was really looking forward to it. Yeah in the last pic you can see where it was resting/rubbing on the loom I figure overtime it will end up wearing through. I am just really disappointed I love bolting on new mods and when they don't work or fit it is a huge let down especially when they cost well over $300.00. I just hope this helps other people decide on their intakes

You should do a quick product review on the website where you bought it. It would really help people and K&N (possibly). That is a bummer that your time was wasted on that...

i bought this also last month and i am fairly pleased with it. i had a fairly easy install. my "tube" didn't rub as much as your picture shows. mine was touching but i didn't have to force anything.

has anyone really looked at the stock intake, so much power loss. their are two compartments that the air goes through before it gets to the throttle body. its to dampen the sound but it basically acts as a muffler. the kn 77 is a straight pipe and just bypasses these two compartments.

as for mpg Ive seen some gains. got my 4runner in late august put 2000 miles on it before i put on the kn 77 filter. i live in Pasadena and compute to LA in prime traffic so my avg mpg was 17.4 before. now after putting on around 1200 miles i am at 19.1

so its not a complete waste of time. i feel more power over 3000rpms, that's when you can really feel it "kick in" i didn't buy it for the gains in mpg, but i plan on keeping this 4runner for many years. so if it gives me more power and pays for itself in 5 years, i think its worth it.

ps im typing this at work so sorry if my grammar is bad im trying to type quick!

The little L brackets were a pain and didn't line up very well. I wonder why mine didn't very well and yours seems to fit better? Just really disappointing

those L brackets were kind of a pain now that i think about it, i remember i actually had to unbolt something and bolt it somewhere else so the L bracket and box would fit. not a big deal but they should have made those L brackets already attached to the box itself.

side note, when barely touching the throttle you can kind of hear a whistling noise, but i always have my music loud as hell so it never bothers me.

also, did your engine lid cover that shows the 6 cylinders go back on correctly? i could only get 1 of the 2 things to clip back on because it was hitting the new intake. im sure its an easy fix to just trim the plastic but i was jw if u had the same problem.

Yeah they almost seemed like they were about a 1/2 inch away from where they should have been. I also noticed the whistling noise I thought it was a vacum line or something but they were all secure. My engine cover went back on like it should but was kinda crocked

Interesting discussion as I have a 63 Series in a box sitting in my garage right now...

A couple of questions/thoughts:

Assuming you both have the 77 Series, could some of the fitment issues be related to the upgraded polished aluminum tube as opposed to the standard tube (i.e. lack of flexibility, etc.)?

Could some of the fitment issues be caused by the product originally being developed for the FJ Cruiser?

Its possible my tube was a pain to put in but the biggest problem I had was the heat shield and stupid L brackets. I had a K&N intake on my other 4runner it was a plastic tube intake it fit way better and had no fitment issues at all.

Well I said screw it and ordered a TRD filter from TRDparts4U 67 bucks shipped

Just the filter right? If so, let us know if it has a whole lot of whistle noise around 2k to 3k rpm during non-aggressive acceleration. My K&N is pretty annoying and if the TRD one is better, I might switch...thanks.

Yeah just the filter the K&N intake had a whistle at about 2k rpm as well I will put up a post when it shows up and I put it in.

Here's something I thought you guys might be interested in...

Hi Justin,

Well, that is interesting as the folks at AutoAnything told me that they confirmed with you guys prior to my order that it was a 2010 and 2011 fitment. More importantly, from what I can discern, both of the guys on the thread seem to have 2010 4Runners.

David,

The kit you have is not meant for a 2011 Toyota 4 runner therefore it has never been tested on your vehicle and potentially will not fit. I should have looked it up the first time we spoke because it not being listed means it’s not guaranteed by us and the people that bought them and tried to put them on did so incorrectly.

Hello Justin,

Unfortunately, there’s a crucial difference between saying you’ll provide a refund for something that doesn’t fit and providing me with your personal assurance that it will. Really, it’s not the money at all; it’s the time away from my family or other personal interests as well as the potential for aggravation rather than satisfaction upon installation completion. Implying that the two guys on the forum are incompetent while hordes of unnamed others are less so hardly prepares me for what I will face when I open the box and pop the hood. If there are various fitment issues with the product in certain applications, then you should be identifying them and letting folks know. And, if you truly believe that there are no issues of this kind, then you should be working much harder to assuage my apprehension in regards to moving forward with the installation. My sense is that you are hiding behind corporate customer service double-speak that is fueled by your legal department, which is just sad really, as all of us out here potentially occupy the realm of the satisfied customer, that is until something goes wrong. To suggest that it is the consumer personality rather than your product that is at issue is an easy out and makes me wonder about the health of your corporation’s mindset.

Our systems are guaranteed to work and fit for the vehicles they are intended for. If they don’t you can always return them and get your money back. I appreciate you sharing these threads with me unfortunately there is not much I can do. For every person that talks bad there are hundreds of satisfied customers that don’t say anything.

We have team that works with forums but not all forums can be covered. You can do me the favor of trying out the kit and it you like it please vocalize it on the forums. If you don’t like it just contact me and I’ll take care of getting it returned.

Again thanks for writing

Hi Justin,

I’m not concerned about a scratched aluminum tube as I think my Series 63 comes with a standard tube. However, I am concerned about claims of very poor fitment, parts rubbing or pressing up in strange ways, etc.

I understand there could be some user error involved, but when guys claim they are returning the parts due to installation issues I would think you might be more than just a tad interested in what’s going on and making sure that other customers and members of that forum have their concerns addressed.

Frankly, if I were you I wouldn’t just be interested in what I’m “most concerned about,” but every concern mentioned in the thread.

Of course, if this is just a “courtesy email,” then I suppose there’s nothing more to say…

Hello David,
Which part are you most concerned about there is a lot of information of that thread. If your tube is anyway scratched or damaged let us know. The filter is designed specifically for that intake system so it’s not likely that it doesn’t fit. If you have a specific concern let me know. Thanks for writing

Hi Guys,

I have this product in my garage all ready to install next chance I get. I’m pretty excited as I had a similar product from you guys on my Tundra several years ago and I really like it.

However, this new thread on the 4Runner forum has me doubting if I even want to open the box:

Care to comment…?

Thanks,

David Papke

so much for "not to be publicized" lol

Oops, I didn't see that - I hope I don't get sued...

Here's the guy's last reply:

"There is no reason for them to have trouble putting a 63-9034 on a 2010 if that’s what they really have. It is designed specifically for that vehicle and should fit with ease. It is not designed for the 2011"

Interesting statement since I know places as reputable as Crutchfield list the 77 Series as 2010-up for both the 4Runner and the FJ Cruiser. Sounds like certain folks need to get their stuff a little more organized...

DP

but the 2011 is the same as the 2010 under the hood (and elsewhere)... so how could something fit the 2010 but not the 2011?

Yup, that's what I mean...

Folks seem to have their signals crossed a little bit - I know this is just one piece out of hundreds that they make, but this is their bread and butter and it just seems strange to me that a company can be this loosely run...

I dunno, I'm just a teacher, so what do I know about business...

I agree! I would say that about 50% of customer service reps respond the way one would hope to a correspondence such as yours. It may not be a direct reflection of the company's quality though. Clearly the one you are communicating with has very poor customer service skills. Why doesn't he just pick up the phone and have a man to man conversation with you and use your feedback constructively? All you want them to do is make a product that works the way they claim, and have knowledge to back up their claims.

If you talk to them, make sure you interrupt them a lot by whistling around 2k. :naughty:
