K&N Series 77 Intake

Why would you go with an intake of that design in the first place? You essentially replaced your factory intake (which was a true CAI) with a hot air intake. The K&N is open to the engine bay. Take a look at some other intakes like TRD, which was designed by AFE. The box is closed and only cool air from the wheel well comes in.

Yeah, I've heard that before and it makes sense. However, I had the same set-up on my Tundra and felt the throttle response improved, which is the main reason I want to give it a try.

The whole thing is that driving an automatic is like kissing your sister, so I'm just looking for as many ways as I can to make the process a little more responsive...

i read thru the responses from the customer service rep quickly and may not have got everything cuz im here at work but it sounds like he talked to AutoAnything where hamilton and i bought it? alittle weird and invasive that autoanything would give out our info like that if its true.

but was he saying that we possibly bought the wrong product from auto anything? thats bs, there is a drop down menu and i picked: 2010-toyota-4runner

it didnt say anything like 2010+2011-toyota-4runner. it said it was specifically made for the 2010.

i donno, maybe i read his last statement wrong. can someone explain his response better in a non buisiness CYA manner. cuz im alittle confused

i read thru it again and the rep is saying it is made specifically for the 2010 4runner. not the 2011. got it.

i could see if hamilton and i had a 2011 and it didnt fit then we were wrong. but we both have 2010's. it should have fit no problem.

I agree about the K&N design.
Supposedly AFE and TRD will have true CAI's out for the 2010-11's by the end of the year. That's according to discussions on another forum. I officially e-mailed AFE and waiting for a reply. We are currently working on the system for the 2010. The prototyping has just started and I don't have a exact month of when we will release it but I believe it should release early 2011."

I am surprized this thread has seen so much attention lol. I was really just trying to inform people who were thinking about buying it. But yes I do think there are a few issues K&N needs to figure out to improve the current design and it does some like they have provided a couple really lame excuses.

On the K&N website, it shows a top cover, does the kit not come with that? You'd think if it was cut off from the rest of the engine, it would be a CAI.

just to update on how i feel about buying this...

first 2000 miles stock- 17.4mpg

2000 miles with kn77- 18.6mpg

i drove very timidly when i first got my 4runner...with the kn77 i have been driving more aggressive because i feel more comfortable behind the wheel.

so overall it gave me a 1.2mpg gain but i am also driving it harder now than i was with it stock.

i can definitely feel more power when i hop on the freeway. it seemed slugish getting up to speed but now it really has some get up and go. i still have a slight whistle while barely touching the gas on the freeway cruising at 70 but if u are listening to the radio you cant hear it. only when you turn off the radio.

also i am using Arco 87 gas. its the cheapest gas you can get here in so cal. im sure if i used chevron 87 or something it would raise it slightly but i donno if it is worth it. arco is 2.99 here and chevron is 3.11 a gallon

I e-mailed K&N about the whistle, they said its not their fault, its the natural sound of the engine no longer muffled by the stock intake.:repuke: Closed airbox TRD intake = no annoying whistle. Anyone want to buy a slightly used K&N intake? j/k The e-mail they sent had that silly disclosure at the bottom of the guy's statement...I don't remember signing a confidentiality agreement when I e-mailed them, what are they afraid of?:wtf:

Well, I ended-up sending my 63 Series back unopened after having it sit in my garage for a few weeks. After having some trouble with my Borla cat-back install, I just didn't want to have to wrangle another part on to the truck.

The kicker though, was that I saw the TRD unit in the 2011 4Runner Accessories catalog and figured that it was more than just myth and worth the (hopefully short) wait...

Yeah basically K&N sucks now I was disappointed at first but now with TRD coming out with one that's what I am going with. What is odd according to K&N the intake fits the FJ to? TRD already has the intake out for the FJ I am curious to know if it will fit the 4runner?
