KDSS / Mod Hell - Rant!

It appears my dream truck is turning into a game of Whack-A-Mole and I'm convinced that KDSS is a huge mistake for anyone modding their 4Runner.

After having my new Pelfrey aluminum bumper and winch installed the front to rear rake and side to side unevenness is just too much to accept. I'm sure the added 135# is contributing to the dip in the front and I'm having my Icon's adjusted next week to accommodate that. I'm also having the alignment redone due to some weird inside tire front right tire wear that preceded the bumper install. I suspect the KDSS lean is contributing, at least in part, to this wear.

The KDSS lean is especially driving me nuts. I'm sure it will only get worse with me adjusting the front shocks to adjust for the front dip. Hopefully, I can get some good advice or words of encouragement because, I'm honestly considering taking all this stuff off my truck and selling it and the truck too.

What spring rate do your front coilovers have?

PM me your email. ill send you over some PDFs on KDSS correction that was sent to me by Wheelers. I havent done it yet as i'm waiting for my suspension to come in. There's a mwray8909 out in ventura who installed a bunch of lifts on other members rigs with KDSS. try hitting him up if your up to driving out to ventura.

If you're having the suspension adjusted to correct rake, couldn't they do the same for correcting the lean?

Maybe post some pics of the issue. I haven't experienced any sort of issue's with my 14' with KDSS.
Does the Pelfrey aluminum bumper really weigh 135#? That sounds heavy for aluminum.

You should be able to correct the lean issue by adjusting the coilovers, I would'nt consider selling everything.

Try Super Trucks in San Bernardino is where I had my 4runner kdss reset and my icons maxed out ... which fixed some of the issues

ps. where in Riverside are you ???

if im not mistaken there is a shim kit required for most KDSS suspension mods.

to help correct the lean once a lift is installed. I don't know who makes them but google may help

KDSS looks good in the brochure and it probably performs well, but after having XREAS, I decided not to get it if I am to modify the suspension. Hope you get it sorted out.

Could not agree more, that KDSS is for Lexus for the street it's certainly not designed for real off-road vehicle which is why you won't find it on the TRD pro or any FJ cruiser.

Because TRD Pro is a real off road vehicle compared to a TE? I'm gonna need a large for this one.

Easier for us all if you just pull the parts and sell it. ;)

Shouldn't the KDSS specific aftermarket suspension take care of that stuff, if installed and adjusted correctly? Did you have lean before the bumper/winch install?

Hey Wraith, I'm in downtown. I have an appointment with SoCal Super Trucks next Friday. It took 6 weeks to get an appointment but, they are the only people who touch my rig.

I have that fix, thanks. All my research is saying it's only temporary and the lean comes back.

I probably should know that but, I couldn't tell you. They're whatever comes with Icon Stage-7.

Apparently, the lean is a geometry issue, post lift. There is a fix but, it's temporary.

Yes, I will try that with the alignment and front coil-over adjustment. The spacer goes on the rear right only.

Thanks for all the comments.

our max preload on Long Travel front are ... as quoted from ICON direct

"Max preload is 2.13” and that’s the measurement of exposed thread between the top of the adjuster nut and the bottom of the top cap."

ps... after driving 100+miles on after adjustment re-torque everything down

:blah::blah::blah:

Any information other then it being left off a couple models which could be for 1000 different corporate reasons to justify that train of thought?

KDSS is not some magical system that turns a 4runner into a rubicon killer, but its not garbage. I can see the train of thought if you are going to modify your suspension heavily that it makes little sense to deal with the hassles and/or take off something you spent good money on upfront but this talk of not being designed for real-off road use is garbage. Your welcome to an opinion like everyone else but these kind of posts make it tough for new guys to make an informed choice (as always - Test drive/plan to the best of your ability your future use/desires)

While some may think I am biased as I paid extra for that option I will gladly, without complaint drive a 4runner without it over what the other options for the price are. Any 4runner without it would be capable of going everywhere I have taken mine - but I hold flat on those highway on ramps like a champ

I'm at 1.687 (1 11/16") I'll have them screw them down another 3/8" and that should net another 1/2" or more of lift based on the radius of the LCA and shock mount point.

Do you have any pics to help show/depict the situation? I too am experiencing a lean but I just reset the system from time to time.
