Keep the old car??

I just bought an 07 4R a couple weeks ago. I did not trade in my 07 Scion tC because I knew they wouldn't give me hardly anything for it. I'm tossing it back & forth whether or not to sell my Scion or keep it. I don't want to sell my Scion & regret selling it. Just looking for opinions from others if it's worth it to keep my Scion. Any input would be appreciated

My buddy has a TC and a truck, he uses the truck when the weather's bad or to haul things, he uses his TC for more daily driving and to save on gas. Really depends if you can justify keeping the vehicle and paying insurance on it. I have a truck and a coupe as well, but the coupe lives in the garage mostly as it's only a summer car

Call and check to see how much insurance is. With multicar discount, I find its isn't bad to have two. I bet you'll enjoy the mileage the Tc gets if gas goes back up. If you can justify the upkeep on two cars, go for it!

If you can afford it keep both. I find it very handy to have a spare car. I have my car on jack stands right now while the Ohlin shocks are getting rebuilt. Might be 3 weeks before they come back, but oh well not worried since I have the spare car.

If your TC is a manual transmission model, it probably gets decent MPG. If it's fun to drive and paid for, and you have a place to park it, why not keep it?

I have a DD, it's a 97 Mazda Protege with a 5 speed. Fun to drive, but better yet it gets 31+ MPGs no matter how I drive it. Tires are cheap, too.

Not only does it save me $$ by consuming less gas, it also saves wear-and-tear on my 4runner and gives me another vehicle to drive when my 4runner's in the shop.

Not everyone can do the 2 vehicle setup (for example, you live in a big city and have to pay extra for another parking space) but if you can do it, it's very handy.

BTW, when my wife was shopping for her new car, we test drove the Scion TC and she really liked it. She almost bought one but then she drove an Altima Coupe and that was it for her. Still like the TC though!

I agree. If you don't need to sell it, keep it and use it as a gas saver.

I see only two reasons to sell it, you need the cash or you have no place to park it.

Other than that, keep it. 2nd or 3rd vehicles are great to have around.

Thanks all for your input, it's been very helpful. For now I'm going to keep the tC, I do have 2 parking spots for myself so it works out good. I have been driving the tC to & from work, about 45+ miles a day, so it is obviously much better on gas than the 4R. I bought my 4R about a week in a half ago kind of a spur of the moment decision. It seemed like a good price so I couldn't pass it up: 07 SR5 4x4 39,700 miles on it got it for $19,700 before tax, title & license. I think I'm starting to feel a little buyers remorse but the activities I enjoy doing a 4R suits my needs better than a car. I guess if worse comes to worse I could always sell it right? Remember that not only will you be saving gas by driving the Scion, you will be saving wear-and-tear on the 4runner and most especially the tires. Unless your Scion has some kind of high-performance tires, I'll bet the 4runner tires are almost double the price of your Scion tires. So just by not wearing out those expensive SUV tires you're saving money.

Thanks for the perspective on the tires Martin. How many miles can you typically get on tires for the 4R? Looks like I might need some next year. Any recommendations? I Did some research on tirerack for SUV tires & it looks like Michelin's are pretty good. Price wise you were right, it's over $200 more for the SUV tires.

Sell the TC and get a cheap car like a civic that is already depreciated so you get 2 cars and a little extra cash. Just my opinion.

Funny, I traded in my Scion tC for the 4Runner...but my Scion was not paid for, and like any good 'new car purchase negotiation strategy/approach', I never brought up the trade in until AFTER I negotiated the price on the 4Runner. It worked out, they paid it off, and the extra went to the 4Runner price reduction.

If I look back now, I would have considered selling it on my own simply to make a few more bucks. If you already have 'regret' on the mind...you won't get that out of your head. Keep it until the day you realize, 'I don't drive it enough to justify a 2nd vehicle' then sell it for the cash to put towards the 4Runner pay off or even upgrades/mod's.

Great work on finding a low mileage rig, you did indeed get a good buy. Tires, I bought BFG Long Trails, they were already on it, so it was like an OE replacement, and I spent $800 in all, at Discount Tire. (that's with mount/balance, et al). I am dreaming though, of BFG A/T's in the future when these wear out...

Funny is right What year tC did you have? Mine is an 07 I bought it brand new 6 years ago I have 107,700 miles on it now. How long did you have yours? How long have you had your 4Runner? Do you miss your tC at all?

Thanks for the advice on the tires. I've been reading reviews & everyone highly recommends the BFG A/T's. My friend had a set & he said they were the best tires ever. But I do see how expensive they are. Ouch! If finances agree I think I'll go with those when the time comes

I think my regrets are coming from a timing issue. I probably bought it sooner than I planned. The vehicle definitely suits my needs for the things I like to do better than a car does. I took up kayaking last year, love to mountain bike & go hunting every now & then. I couldn't pass it up b/c of the price & I prefer the 4th gen body style over the 5th gen. So I jumped on it.

im dealing with the same problem, i want to sell my Z but know i will miss it so much, bought the 4runner about 2months ago now and still havent made up my mind, even stealing someones parking spot to since i only have one parking spot :whip:

its really nice to have two rides so you can have options... but insurance/parking/washing multiples can ruin the fun

Hi JoJo, sorry it took me a bit to get back. Mine was also an 07' I think, it had less than 50k miles on it if I recall...truly was a great car. Do I regret anything? Nope. I do from time to time see a Scion tC and think, that was a cool car - and was worth owning. The gas mileage was really only slightly better, because it was a stick, I was driving it a bit harder (and it was sportier of course), so I was only getting 22-24 mpg. In the 4Runner I average 19+ and drive more relaxed due to its size/casual manner.

When you find a good deal, and something you like, it is VERY hard to pass it up, your only remorse will be short lived. My decision was lifestyle related too, much of an outdoors person, and even though I had a hitch rack added to my Scion (1/4 hitch), it still wasn't sufficient enough for ALL the things I wanted to do, plus the added space for guests.

My advice would be to hold on to the Scion if insurance is inexpensive, and see what happens in terms of whether you drive it or not enough to justify a 2nd vehicle. Otherwise, it's truly a financial decision to sell it, it'll continue to depreciate for many more years - so keep that in mind. But then again..doesn't everything unless it's older than 25 years?

Tires - I had a not so great experience with BFG T/A's on a jeep in the rain, and nearly spun it 180 degrees on accident...so wet traction made me nervous. I learned about the 'E' rated versions, which are good for snow/ice and the like - so if you live somewhere with wet potential, I would spend a few extra bucks for those!!

It's been quite a while since I wore out a set of tires on a car - after I finished college and got married my annual miles driven went from over 23,000 to less than 12,000. And given that I've only kept my last 3 vehicles for about 2 1/2 years, I just haven't had the opportunity to wear out a set of tires.

Having said that, I'd guess 50,000 miles is probably a reasonable expectation and anything beyond that is gravy.

As far as tire recommendations, I had BFG AT KO's on my 99 T4R and liked them, but I balked at the price of replacing them when they got old. So I put a set of Hankook Dynapro AT-Ms on it instead, and they worked out great in both the snow and rocks. I'd definitely get another set.

My 07 T4R currently has Cooper Discoverer M+S's on it and they do great in the snow. Come springtime I'll take them off and put on my FJC wheels with BFG MTs in 255/75/17. The MTs were on the wheels when I got them and have about 50% left on them. I'll give them a try for a few weeks and if I don't like them, I'll take them off and probably put the Hankooks on.
