I smoked a Bambi recently at about 65. I'll have pics soon but right now I'm piecing my poor 4runner back together. Anyhoo one of my drivers had a suggestion of adding fog lights to the 4runner to make the entire front of the truck "lit" so the deer won't think that they can duck under the vehicle (surprisingly this one did exactly that...and that's why I still have a truck)

His theory is that beyond deer being impressively stupid when they run out and see the headlights they don't see anything under the lights because the headlights are so intense. This causes them to try and "duck" the light and they get smoked by the vehicle. :shrug:

This make any sense to you guys? It seems plausible but I'm not about to be mythbusters on this one. I'm $350 into fixing my truck and without a garage it sucks a$$.

As a second note. Any of the cheap amazon led spot lights worth it? I've got some good quality ones but I've never wagered money on the Amazon lights lol.

Man, I grew up in northern MI and saw about 1000 deer hit per year, by all sorts of rigs. I can't see how having lower lights will help...would you prefer the deer to jump and go through the window? They are not a bright creature.

Steel bumper is about the best protection you can get other than an incredible run of good luck.

Sorry to hear about the accident. I really hope your rig is repairable!
 
^^^^ Agreed, spent a summer in Montana, noticed nearly every truck had a big steel bumper. When i asked, one reason to have one was that it helps a lot with deer strikes.
 
Some kind of bumper is in the works. Right now I have too little time to build and way to little spare cash to do a plate bumper.

Might be able to fashion some kind of brush guard out of .120 wall tubing and some boxed plate. that would be a lot better than the stocker if I tie it into a the skid pan frame. We'll see what I come up with. Thanks for the input. I hate deer.
 
Pics as promised. Got a little more straightening to do. Come a long has done a great job so far though. Just a little more tweaking.

I guess you kept it straight? I think trying to avoid one would be more disastrous. Rolling into a ditch or crashing into a tree would be worse than hitting a deer. It's the main reason I bought my Shrockworks FB but haven't had a chance to test it out yet. LOL I've been very lucky there are deer everywhere when I'm driving home from work at midnight.

Yep kept her straight. There was nothing that I could do. One leap out from the bushes under my truck....


I'm in the same boat as you man. This midnight shift is great for school but the deer are EVERYWHERE!!

Lights being down low is a urban myth. You can't get any lower than a Miata with fogs and headlights on right. I nailed that sucka.

I invested in a little 12V gadget that made the same whistle sound as the wind whistles but ran off the truck's electric. This allowed me to sneak up behind three grazing white tails and flip it on. (New Jersey deer are pretty blasé.) They didn't even flinch. Just kept munching away. Either I had three deaf deer or whistles are a fraud.
 
One almost walked out in front of me last Friday at dusk, I was doing about 70. It was a small doe but it would have wasted my bumper. I got luck that it just froze rather than kept walking.

My step dad put one of those deer whistles on his F150 back in the 90's. One week later he hit a deer.

There is nothing you can do to make deer not jump out in front of you, period. All you can do is keep an eye out for them the best you can and put a big steel bumper on to minimize the damage...
