Keeping the Deer Away

I whacked one yesterday, but with a much better outcome than the OP. My sympathies I know what a pain it is.

I think my fat lip bumper saved me, just so happened it went broadside to me and hit dead center of the bumper. It sticks out enough it held the impact off my grille. I sent it flying but the only damage I've noticed is the little pull away recovery point cover was askew, and it didn't fit good to begin with. That and I was going slow because it was foggy, I'm guessing I was only going about 40 tops, and had a little room to brake after it popped out of the fog and jumped in front of me.

Around here we say it's not a matter of if you'll hit a deer, it's when you'll hit one. I may have lost count of how many I've hit now, especially if you factor in hits where it didn't do any real damage.

A deer totaled one of my vehicles. It tried to jump the vehicle from the side of the road as I went by, it's head hit the windshield, blew glass all over me, then it cartwheeled down the side of the vehicle hitting every body panel on the way. If it had jumped a fraction of a second sooner the whole deer would have come in on me and not been stopped by the A pillar.

My step dad put one of those deer whistles on his F150 back in the 90's. One week later he hit a deer.

There is nothing you can do to make deer not jump out in front of you, period. All you can do is keep an eye out for them the best you can and put a big steel bumper on to minimize the damage...

In my case, it didn't jump out in front. SHE hit ME, running full-tilt into my driver's side door. Mashed her face against the window, which didn't break, luckily, and her butt mashed the rear door. This was during the rut, and nothing would have stopped her. She kept going, too. Two new doors. Truck was brand new and I still had collision coverage.

Probably had the polarity reversed on your whistle and it was working in "attract" mode.

I've hit two deer with my ARB bumper and the only damage has been a cracked turn signal lens. One hit was only at about 20 mph and the poor thing ended up under the engine skid plate making all sorts of interesting sounds in protest. I reverse off him and he jumped up and fled, still making interesting sounds.

In my area, the deer rarely get spooked and run across the road. They are usually feeding near the road and stay right where they are since they are so used to vehicles, or they are already crossing the road on their way somewhere. That's when they become victims.

I haven't hit one yet & I'm livin' in the woods for 10.5 years now. My Brother told me that people have been kicked to death after they come through the windshield. In the back of my mind my plan is to duck & roll out the door if one ever comes in. Most of the time I'm driving my car coming home from work & it's much lower to the ground than the T4R.

Deer are the reason I run spot lights on my truck. I don't need them for off roading really, but they're amazing at spotting deer in the dark going down windy backroads. I need to get some sort of a flood light up front again to project out into the ditches to help spot them too.

Hmmm, hit the gas. Makes sense but will mentally be hard to do. Quick reaction will be to hit the brakes. I will think about it every night driving home! LOL

Funny, this reminded me of two kangaroos I hit when I lived in Australia. At the time, I was driving an '85 Mazda 626. The first roo i hit was bounding across the road as quick as it could and at the moment of impact it happened to be on the 'up stroke' of the jump. My hood clipped its feet and it rolled up and over the roof leaving virtually no damage at all. However, the second roo I got was at 'full compression' of it's jump and that mf'er destroyed the front of my car. haha

Never in my life have I ever thought about someone hitting a kangaroo. But now this reminds my of that stupid "Kangroo Jack" movie. I hit a deer wednesday. Doing about 65-70 only got my bumper and A/C condenser. My girlfriend was with me. First thing I said was dang, there's a reason to build a bumper now

Driving at 15 mph I can do on my bicycle but takes me a couple hours to get home. I only have 6 hours to sleep before my day starts again as it is. So sleep is my hurry.

Unfortunately I can also vouch for the effective pulverizing ability of the ARB bumper, I hit one albeit a smaller deer, I was doing 40ish on a winding mountain road it jumped out between two parked cars right in font of me. Im pretty sure he died on impact, there was deer mush all over the underside of the 4Runner, ARB bumper took the hit like a champ, not even scratch.

^^^^ Agreed, spent a summer in Montana, noticed nearly every truck had a big steel bumper. When i asked, one reason to have one was that it helps a lot with deer strikes.

Any other reasons they gave?

I grew up out west and when I go other places in the country, it seems different to not see trucks without bumpers. In my mind, real trucks are mostly out west since I need a bumper and flatbed on it for it to be a "real truck" often times.

It was just a passing question so no first hand answers, but Ive seen bumpers used as tie points for things such as tents, animals, and hand winches. I think mostly just being able to hold up to use and abuse a lot better than a factory bumper.
