Key stuck on acc

So I have a 1997 Toyota 4Runner SR5 V6 Auto and I'm having issues where the key doesn't want to come out and only comes out when I unplug the battery. I have the same issue on my dads 1999 Tacoma and they both have the pistol grip style shifter if that makes a difference

That happened to mine a few years ago. I found a craigslist mobile locksmith and he said either replace the whole lock mechanism at about $250 or he could 'rig' it for $75. I went with the cheaper alternative.

Essentially he snapped whatever pin or part was hung up. It kinda scratches the lock just a bit right outside where the key goes, no big deal. But it did give it a 'new feature'. Now you can remove the key with ignition in any position, kinda handy! Luck. :cowboy:

When it sticks try starting it again put it in gear and then back to park.
That works for me.

Had the same issue about 2 months ago, ended up having to have a locksmith come out and fix the ignition. Something about the split wafer Toyota design.. he ended up taking my current cylinder out and removing one of them. Cost about $100 but haven't had a single problem since.

This only sometimes works so I thought that maybe it would be the park neutral switch that doesn't detect when the transmission is set on park which might be why it doesn't let it come out and it comes out when I unplug the battery

I resolved my issues with my key getting stuck by always pushing the transmission shifter slightly to the right when putting it in park. After taking it apart I realized that unless I pushed the shifter the switch circled in red would not engage. Of course if your ignition cylinder is the issue then this won't work.

If you do a search using the search sticky thread (not the forum search) with the words "key stuck ACC" you should see results for resolving this. The forum doesn't return 3 char searches so the same search (unless you use the how to search sticky) would only return results for "stuck".

Alright so I was doing some research and found out that unplugging the whole shift lock unit let the key come out and I also unbolted the shift lock solenoid since leaving it bolted prevented me from shifting gears if the whole unit was unplugged.

So I narrowed it down to either being the shift lock control switch, the shift lock solenoid, or the shift lock control ECU

Does anyone know which would be most likely to go out first or have had the same experience and know what it is

Since I got my 'Runner, I've always wondered why I was able to remove the key in any position. Now I know!
