Khumo A/T vs Nitto Terra Graps

After putting my lift together, my tires have finally worn down enough to replace them. I have a OME/Bilstein front lift set to zero on the struts and a daystar 1.5 rear spacer. I was going to opt for superflex flex coils at first, but I wanted to keep a stock ride, and it's only a half inch or so difference so screw it.

Anyways, my roomate's dad owns a tire shop and I went by for some prices today on a 285/70/17 and here's what he gave me:

Kumho KL 78 A/T- $716

Firestone Destination A/T- $737

Nitto Terra Grappler- $780

I had the nittos on the FJ i had (R.I.P.) and loved them so that's what I'm leaning towards. What is y'alls opinion?

I'm sold on Kumhos. 3 years and 20K miles on my current set. They look barely used. On snow and ice they are fantastic too. Also very low road noise.

I had several tires from Khumo with issues. Bad sidewall, Separated belt, tread separation. It was continual issues. Never again will I run a Kraphu tire.

I have had good luck with Nitto in the past and the terra Grapler is a good all around tire. Might be my next tire once my MT's wear out. If you liked the Nitto in the past just go with them again.

are those prices mounted and balanced with alignment? lift installed?

doesnt seem like much of deal. imho wally world does $12mount balance each = $48

i would go with tires you had before and liked. new tires will take anouth 40-50k to wear out thats average 4 years later!

I put the lift on myself over the summer. But yes it's mounted balanced and out the door. I would never trust the ignants at wal-mart anywhere near my truck, and I would rather give my business to a local guy instead of them.

Good point on the Nittos, thats definitely what I'm leaning towards

How are they on dirt and in mud?

prices i quoted were retail from tire rack, i am a dealer for nitto, so the price i quoted were retail. i would expect this tire shop to make on your deal close to $250-275.

^ Since you don't thing that's a great deal by all means feel free to give him your dealer pricing. He's not getting ripped off so who cares how much the tire shop is making in profit. The price he was given was in line w/ Discount and Tirerack by the time you pay for mounting / balancing.

I'm running NTGs w/ about 25-30K miles on them and they have plenty of life left. Since you've used them before and know what to expect why change tires. If I were you I'd stick w/ the NTGs.

I loved my Nittos, wish I had swapped them off when I traded in my 03 for my 08

Correct, it's a Ok deal. Retail. Nothing special deal or anything. You can walk into Amy tire shop and get pretty much the same deal.

I am sure the OP would like to know what is the profit is in the deal. This way he will know if the shop is pulling his leg on how great a deal it is. If he was closer to me and needed tires I would kill that deal all day everyday. But he's not, too bad.

I'm a college student in Rome and don't have free time to go outside of town to get it done. My room mate's dad owns a local tire shop and always hooks me up, and he's the cheapest in town. I try to go family owned as much as I can.

When I've gone to him for bigger jobs on my FJ like CV axles, pulley bearings or starters he usually throws in a service and cuts labor a ton. I'm also getting a brake job, oil change and alignment so I'm sure in the end he'll hook me up. Not too worried about my choice.

Always liked kumhos had them on my 03 dbl cab taco , reasonable priced too !

Toyo owns Nitto, they are tough tires, but may sacrifice mileage due to higher rolling resistance. I had Terra Grapplers on an FJ60 and they were great on the road, BFG KOs are better off road.
