Took the Bastard out yesterday - I don't have any good pics of my own truck yet, but to hold you over here's my buddies' long-arm Rubicon on 35s getting it done:

6" front shackles and a brutal re-pounding of the body seam alleviated most of the rubbing issues up front. The little bit that remains will be rectified by shoving the axle 1" forward when I install my crossover steering, a mod that is perilously close to being complete.

Oh, I forgot to mention, I recalibrated my deflators for 12 PSI and tried that out - significantly better traction for sure, but the tires got squishy enough that rallying out the exit trail was a little sketchy!

A little bit, yeah. But a lot of that is probably the siping I had done, which you won't need.

I've wheeled my tires twice now and I already have a good amount of chipping out of them and a few chunks too. Both times were at 35 PSI though, I'm thinking if I ran them at 15 or so there would be more grip therefore less tire spinning and more crawling and I wouldn't chunk them as much. Sound right?

For sure. Lower PSI = better traction, and better flex when you do spin the tires, that'll lead to less chunking.

I find that there are very few things that I can get up with wheelspin but can't crawl. I'll spin every now and again, but when I get to the point I smell hot rubber, I'm learning to back down and look for another line. The big rigs with lots of rubber and big motors can get up stuff with sheer friction, but they've got trailers to take their junk home after they break it too. I don't have the balls to push my truck that hard.

My battery hold down failed today. The positive battery post shorted out on my throttle body, melting the fitting for the EGR vacuum hose and nearly causing a fire on the trail. I need to replace the throttle body, and now I guess I need a battery box too! Somebody took some pics, I'll post them if he sends them to me.

You definitely need to watch out for that stuff--those things can go from harmless to scorching in a heartbeat. I had an old Firebird that the positive cable was touching the header and melted through, shorting it out--by the time I pulled over and popped the hood, the insulation had melted off the cable, and the cable end melted in half! Thankfully all it took was a new (shorter--LOL) cable to get going again. Could've been a LOT worse!

Good idea! I need to rebuild the terminal anyway, I'll put those on my shopping list.

It did catch on fire, but we caught it quick enough and the quick application of another guy's tshirt put it out. I owe him bigtime, because there's a fuel rail really close to where it was burning.

No sway bar, but I do still have the dogbone in. I took it off and the brake steer about ran me off the road, so I put it back on and it's staying until I get my crossover done.

LOL yes no dogbone with stock steering can be a crazy ride.:wow2: If you want a cheep and easy way to get more flex is to build a new dog bone with a jonny joint on both ends. Just a thought

You've got the wrong axle for what I've got in that box. Or what I had in that box, anyway. It's scattered all over my garage floor now .

What do I have to do to drag you and your '87 with me down to Moab in October? Or even up Mineral Basin on Sunday?
