Killer deal on T4R with rust: worth it?

Hey guys and gals! I stumbled across a VERY nicely priced 3rd gen tonight. 2000 limited w/dif lock, 134k miles, silver exterior w/grey cloth interior...for $5500. The truck seems like a killer deal, but the owner emailed me some pictures of some of the undercarriage rust. He said the car was from Rhode Island and had spent some time up there (see pics below). He said he got several quotes from local shops all in the neighborhood of $500 to 'fix' the rust. This 4Runner is about 6 hours away (relatively close all things considered) and seems like a great find besides the rust.

Does this rust look to bad to consider buying the truck? I'd gladly take it to a shop to have them 'fix' the rust issue if it involved anymore than a few hours with a drill and wire brush attachment. Personally, it looks pretty bad--the rust appears to be really eating at the frame.

Also, does the hood rust spot appear repairable, or would I need to replace it (the hood that is)?

$500 to repair the rust? I'd say more like $1500+. You'll need to sandblast the whole undercarriage and then recoat it. Get a hammer and bang on it to check the integrity of frame. I wouldn't say its a killer deal. It would be a Killer deal if its the price without the rust.
 
Dang thats a good deal that rust ain't nothing once its stripped to the frame and parted out for good future use. See rusted frames never hurt anyone when they are in a pile.... :yo:

2. That frame is done.

3. $5500? You would have to be high to pay even half on that.

This thing is rusty by northeast standards.
 
Being from California, I don't know shit about rust, but I do know that when your hood is bleeding red crap on your grill when it rains — that's more than a "spot" of rust as the owner claims.

I'd walk away, or offer 1500 for it and yank all the good parts and put them on a beater truck with a solid frame.
 
From houston cl so it was probably parked on the galveston beach its whole life & that is exactly what any vehicle living on the beach looks like after a few years. Rest of Texas vehicles are severe rust free...
 
I'm from the east coast and live in Oregon now (rust free state). So, I've dealt with rusty rides my whole life.

I wouldn't bother with that truck. Move on....
