How's it going T4R fam -Here from Monterey, CA, long time fan and new participant of the community. I came over from 3rd Gen land after running into some catastrophic failures on my '97 T4r that I posted up http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-gen-t4rs/261433-something-i-can-fix-myself.html#post3089921

Long story short, I ended up putting everything back together and getting another month out of it before things really went sideways. Thanks to the input of some other T4r members and some shopping, I've decided to sideline the 3rd Gen with a planned engine swap for a low-mileage import. I have spent the past month drinking from the T4r firehose of information. I originally intended on purchasing a 5th gen Offroad Premium but sided against it -couldn't justify a 5th Gen purchase at the price they're going for here in California. Anyways, about 4 weeks ago I picked up a 2008 Limited V8 with 140k miles (clean carfax/service records current and maintained/Timing belt changed at 90k).

The short term plan is to DD the '08 while I work on getting my '97 back on the road. Once that's done I plan to reverse the roles of the two vehicles to make the '08 a casual driver with a build direction of family overland trips. With that being said, I'm new to overlanding but have logged hours of research as of late. Looking forward to sharing the progress of the build and hearing input from the wise.

I have an inspection scheduled in a few days to help address any potential mechanical problems (I don't want to build on top of headaches). Was wondering if there is anything I should mention to the shop to look at that would be outside of a normal inspection? Additionally, the shop had mentioned something about Toyota having a "lifetime" transmission fluid in some models around that era... how do I find out if this is true? I want to address any transmission/drivetrain issues before I start adding additional stress'ers. I've tested 4lo and center dif. lock, from what I can tell everything is functioning the way it should.

Thanks Slyfox75, I plan on running 35s in the future (a lot more reading to do on suspension setup/modifications), have been looking to see if people have been running 35s on these stock 18" alloys or if it is smarter to go a smaller diameter wheel i.e. 17s.

A couple days ago I think I read of someone putting 5th gen braking components on the 4th gen but wheels required a specific diameter to do so. Like I said, a lot more reading/note taking to do to figure out the requirements.

Nice looking truck man.. you can run 35s on 18's but if your going to wheel it, its probably less abusive to the wheel to be on 17's..

You can literally just buy 5th gen front calipers rotors and pads.. its a direct bolt on. No modification with your wheels. Only 16 inch wheels were clearance issues. The rear I kept 4th gen because there was a hub size difference in the rotor.

Thanks Bro! I just finished checking out your build thread. Some really good maintenance ideas in there that I plan on incorporating. Did you run into any issues with replacing fluids in your transfer case and transmission? Also, what switch do you have your ditch lights running to?

Transfer case is done with the diffs. I use Mobile 1 75w90 Devlac. The only trick I would say is open the fill ports first. You can order the fill and drain washers in a package on amazon for diffs and transfer case.

Transmission I let the dealer do it. Its about 100 bucks for a drain and fill.

Ditch lights are connected to a customer Toyota switch from aironboard.com

Yep, now they are showing. Beautiful truck! Those LEDs made a huge difference, especially with the heads and fogs. I’ve been meaning to change mine, just haven’t gotten around to it yet. I did do the reverse lights though with some that were recommended in a thread on here, and the difference was very dramatic.

Looks like a pretty sweet bike too.

Thanks for the information, I'll definitely be taking the truck in for the transmission service... wanted to make sure it wasn't something worth tackling myself.

Nice. Did you tint the rear windows darker, or just add tint to the fronts?

Current tint is: 5% Rear, 20% Front, 50% windshield (We'll see if I can make it without getting a ticket). I had this exact tint percent on my previous vehicle for years with no issues, so we'll see. I'm seeing some bubbles on the tint, kinda of looks like trapped water spots. The owner told me all the water spots would dry out in a few days... so also waiting to see if that happens or I will be taking it back (I've never heard of such a thing).

I would post up pics of the finished job but I dropped the truck off for inspection last night. $65 for a complete walk through of everything by a Toyota technician while I am in class, seemed worth it IMO.
