KN CAI Vs Filter. Thoughts?

Hey guys! First off gotta say this forum rocks! Anyway just recently bought my 04' SR5 w/V6, and I've been trying to decide between the KN Intake Kit, or just a filter. The only reason I'm having trouble deciding, is because the concern I have is getting water/mud all over the intake when I go off-road. I want to hear thoughts/opinions, and also want to hear if anyone has the intake kit, have you had any trouble getting mud/water on the intake? Thanks guys :)

I have a cai for my 4.7 and after all the threads I've read about it, I wish I had just gotten a filter. reason being is that the stock air box is more of a cai than the k&n is

Just like beretta_shot said, there are a bunch of threads on this, but I'll say what I've said before:
I got the AFE dry air filter in my airbox, NOT the K&N CAI. Reason is, the stock airbox is already a "CAI" since it draws air from the wheel-well. The K&N actually pulls air from the engine bay, which is already hot, therefore making it much less effective.
The dry filter is better because you don't mess with oiling it and possibly fouling your MAF sensor. The dry filter is only about $50 online and easy as dropping it in, taking out the OEM filter. I didn't see a big increase in mileage by any means, but it is a far cheaper investment than a whole CAI.
ARK_Swamp man has the same filter as I and we got it about the same time in November/December with similar results. I'm happy with it so far.

Hope that answers your question.

Thanks for the input guys!

maybe this will apply more for berettashot, but my main question was those who are using the full intake system, have you ever had problems with mud/water?

Go get a afe pro dry s filter. I had a k&n filter and sold it for the afe. I wouldnt get a cai just get the filter.

I had a Volant CAI and loved the boost and sound. The problem was that it was tripping my check engine codes sometimes due to the confusion it causes the MAF. It is gone now and I have the aFe Pro-Dry S. I am happy and confident that this is the best way to go.

I have the filter and removed the carbon box behind it and my truck runs great. I didn't really see a point for the intake because like others said the intake is in the wheel well

Thanks guys. Going to do HCF Delete shortly, and try out just having a filter. I've been reading of some swamping stories and knowing the air box is decently water tight, I'd feel better with that.

It is fairly water-tight, but obviously being submerged in mud/water for an extended period of time would not be ideal. If that was the case, you probably have far more important things to be worried about....like getting it out haha.

I know in just washing/cleaning the motor with a hose, the box always stays bone dry. Just make sure you don't get buried too deep in the mud!!!

well crap guess i cant park in the pond....

I don't post much because most of the sht!t said on here is most often just flat out wrong or VERY poor advice. For example this discussion.

I will explain this again:

Yes the K&N works just as well as the Volant or factory "boxed" intakes, if not better. There is a reason that it comes with a heat shield and a rubber gasket all around it! It doesn't just float there next to the engine...All around the heat shield you install a rubber gasket to seal it from sucking air in through the engine compartment, that only leaves it to draw air from the passenger side wheel well, and since its not in a box it can actually suck more cold air! Which as always pointed out is the location where "the coldest air" is. When you close the hood the rubber gasket is compressed under the hood, effectively sealing the CAI from the engine compartment nearly 100%. This creates a separate partition for the CAI so it doesn't suck air from the engine compartment and is MUCH larger than a boxed intake...

:ybrick:

My thoughts you will gain more HP with the CAI/Aircharger intake then just the filter. The only other major difference between the two is that the CAI/Aircharger intake is that it will be MUCH louder than the drop in filter.

The facts are right here:
