The moment we have all been waiting for! I mounted it today and tested it with a tire. I wanted to see where the major force was at and I definitely found it but my plates really worked. I really had to push on the tire pretty hard to get it to move while it was closed and when it was open it only flexed when I really pushed down. My plate did not flex at all though which is good.

I cleaned up and cut the top hinge first. Took a while to fit and clean up all the slag.

Then I welded up the bottom hinge. The clearance on one of the bolts was really close but I managed to fit it right where it needed to go anyway.

Pretty happy with the hinge fit although the bottom one could tuck a little nicer. The unintended benefit is that it will close on you if you take your hands off it. I didn't build it to climb on or anything. Just to hold the tire.

With the tire mounted. Good thing I'm only planning 285/55 r 16s lol. Any wider and I would have serious mounting issues.

Doesn't really block a whole lot of the rear window but it does some I suppose.

I admire your commitment and desire to learn/build.

go get some argon.

with the amount of welding you're doing and the practice you're getting it'll save you all kinds of time if you don't have to grind down all of your welds.

plus the old iteration of the saying practice doesn't make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect. you're getting good experience but with a proper welder/argon your welds/welding technique will be way different. plus it'll look a whole ton better, i.e. not having to grind it down.

it's also a lot easier to be confident in your welds with you can see the penetration with clarity.

I would love to go get a bottle but I have a little over a quarter of a spool so I'm gonna run this one out before I go and take the dive on a bottle. Sadly these last few things are probably going to be my last welding projects for a little while. School is much more important.

Got most of the work needed done tonight. Came out well and fits great. Fits snug as a bug in the gap. Took a little while to fit and weld up right but I very glad I did so. I only wish that making the bolts for the assembly was as easy. I ended up inventing a way to get the nuts on the backside. I am sure it will be a pita to install....but it will be possible.

Tomorrow I will be doing the final smoothing on the hinge and paint that sucker. Then it will get some neoprene treatment and get sandwiched together. Also the tailgate will come apart for painting. Then that is it for this particular project!!

It does....kinda lol. I was going to fashion a pin hold so it would do so even when it wouldn't. The stock system had one. Good catch though. I had forgotten about it till you mentioned it [emoji23]

Definitely do that, if you don't then that big ol' heavy tire will take you out when you're getting stuff out of the back

Everything is complete and painted. Looks great, feels great, and the side panel doesn't even flex. I am very happy with it.

So I did ething interesting today. I took off my snorkel to see what kind of paint damage or if anything had rusted.

The holes and paint look good. I've been jiggling the snorkel around for a couple of months at least through the desert so there should have been signs of something.

I threw some more silicone and a pad of 1/4" neoprene rubber between the body and the snorkel and bolted it all back together. Now I don't have to worry much about any of that stuff.

Getting ready for a trip soon so mods are not at the top of the list. Here's what is going to happen in no particular order.

Power steering flush
Clutch line flush
Radiator flush
Tbu upgrade
Brake fluid flush
Studless rear Diff mod
Diff Fluid change/check
Oil change
Sea Foam treatment
Another coat of paint on the roof rack (rust is spotting)

And if my bike sells soon
Tacoma trd springs up front
Bilstein 5100
Trim packers for the 906 springs
Lc stock tokico shocks

Honestly all of that shouldn't take more than a day. I'm going to check the Trans fluid but I just changed to redline so it should be in good shape. Also going to check my valves at some point.

Last minute trip to Seattle popped up. Didn't get time to snap pics. Ended up taking the little scion. Amazing little car. 125 bucks in gas to go from Palm Springs area all the way to downtown Seattle. I know the 4runner couldn't do that lol. I will get things taken care of here and return soon to the fab cave lol.
