Krypto's Camping/Expedition Build

Another completely non related 4runner post lol. Don't worry my vacation will be over at some point and I will get back to some projects.

Feeling extremely broke currently. Dropped the cash on bilstein 5100 fronts and 5125 rears. Also tossed in is everything to flush the radiator, power steering, clutch line, and brake system. My upper ball joints finally came in as well.

I got one thing not really repair related and that was a set of hood struts from redline. Always wanted them and I finally just said screw it. Much work will be done soon!

Had a good trip up the coast and back. Came back with a new people hauler for the wife. It's also world's more comfy than the scion on trips.

Just bought a laptop too for going back to school as well. Now it's time to refill the savings account.

Small update. The hobby shop said no more welding for marines so.....construction will continue as planned.

I'm surprised nobody asked what happened that made this ruling come down. I mean - you are at the Stumps; it isn't like you can hurt anything. I know when I was out there for training in 2005 there was not much out there.

Just curious what some Jarhead did as I was reading through your thread this morning.

Well what has happened is they are trying to save money in mccs and so hours on the hobby shop have dropped, prices have more than doubled, and mechanics helping run the hobby shop have been reduced. It's still running but barely. I buy all my stuff though amazon or Napa and take it in to do the work but only when I absolutely have to. Otherwise I'd have no money for parts!

Sounds like what they were doing at the Norfolk hobby shop when I was over there. They even stopped collecting used oil and made everyone haul their old oil off.

Looks like you have a nice build going though.

Thanks man. Now I'm just trying to get everything done that needs to be done maintenance wise that requires the hobby shop.

Got a little done today. Repainted the top rack to get rid of the orange spots where somehow 6 cans of spray paint missed.

Bolting in the 1st gen rollbar right now and having a good time during the only tolerable days of fall in the desert. It's in the 80s and it feels amazing.

I got so much done today. Really happy about that but I didn't get to the rear shocks or diff fluid change.

Tundra brakes are in. They feel pretty good. Gotta go bed the pads tomorrow after the rear work is completed.

5100s are installed in the front. I went with the second ring on the tundra shocks and it turned out perfect.

The cv angle is perfect too. Won't be changing that for a while.

Ooo ohhhh shiny!! Lol.

Also did the upper ball joints. Mine were shot so it was a good thing I got to them and I got the oil changed as well.

Well I guess all the hard stuff waited till today to happen.

Everything is complete except the hood struts. The 5100s feel fantastic and I mean that in every sense if the word. I did not realize that it was going to flex enough to snap my sway bar so quickly. Maybe it was about to go anyway.

The rears look good and they really control the body well. Everything felt great on and off the road. The tires felt firmly planted

I'm just happy everything was done that needed to be done. Took her out for a test drive and I am floored. Looks like I will be getting some 2nd gen 4runner links.

Well 2 things have happened and neither is good. I ripped a boot on the cv (they look like the originals but I dunno) and the lift helped snap a link on the front swaybar.

I just got these in which should help with any more boots ripping. For 35 a set plus shipping extended boots weren't all that bad. I had to get a couple of tools to do the job.

For right now the sway bar just has to be disconnected. I don't have the funds to drop on building some right now.

I completely forgot this little mod I did yesterday too. Since I installed the 167 snorkel it has flopped in the wind since I refused to put rivets in the windshield frame.

I finally fixed that with a piece of 1" piece of 3/16" plate and a few screws. No there's no wiggle.

Today I rebooted my cv joints with the set from sdhq offroad. I am pleased that my cv joints were in great shape although they had gotten copious amounts of water in them at some point.

I would have pictures but the last thing I was gonna do while attempting this is touch my phone. This was by far the most disgusting job I've done on the 4runner. Redline moly and lucas bearing grease is settled in there now. I should be good for a long long time.

Cv boots went well. Threw her up on the alignment rack and got the long look from the mechanic. He asked me how many miles I had on the steering rack. 260k was my answer and I got a low whistle. They didn't charge me and he showed me the play. The 4runner is currently sitting still in my driveway.

So looks like I'm going to order a Safari rack tomorrow.....against my budget.....ouch.

At least Napa is having a bucket sale around here. I can get the itr from them and anything that fits in the bucket is 20% off. That will help ease the pain. Running out there tomorrow.

So Safari Ltd can't seem to get any steering racks in till the first of the year. That's awesome news. Looks like I'm buying some El cheapo itr and throwing those in praying it will get me off the alignment rack.

I was considering the steering rack guide as well. Maybe that would get me along till I can save for a fill rack.

In other news I have been working on another project besides junk for the 4runner. The wife said she wanted a standing desk so I'm making her one.

Never built a desk before so this one is utilizing the kiss method. It has a shelf and a computer cage. It's a pretty big desk so hopefully she can organize stuff so the need for drawers doesn't arise.

Step one: 100 bucks in steel

Step 2: make a jig for 90 deg angles

Step 3: wing it because over never built a damn desk lol

So the desk bolts together in the middle so that you can get it through doors. The desktop is going to be in the neighborhood of 70x40" for the desktop with a 1" thick top. The top also bolts on for getting through door openings. Hopefully the pieces are small enough.

Any tips or ideas? I am trying to take my time with the welds but all of the tricky angles had me filling in gaps with the welder :(

Good news! The 4runner has a clean bill of health! She drives straight, doesn't creak or squeak, and drives straight as an arrow.

I did the itr and bushings. Made a big difference.

i remember doing this ( or watching someone do this) with the bushings on the steering rack and there was one bushing in particular that took us over an hour to remove...

did you have any problems removing or getting any of the new bushings on?

any tips/tricks to removing it/reinstalling the new ones?
