L4 working, H4 not working

Howdy all, I'm new to this site so forgive any missteps. I've poked around quite a bit and haven't been able to find anything on this. I have a '93 4runner (w 22re). Bought it recently. Mechanic told me the 4wd wasn't working, but it turns out just to be the H4- L4 works fine. Any ideas where I might start? There are a couple free wire hanging out near the front differential (can't figure where to put them), would it be plausible for this to be an electrical issue?

I suspect that your low range is working but your 4wd is not. Your transfer case has two input rails, controlled by your tcase shifter, and they don't talk to eachother so it's entirely possible to be in low range but not 4wd if there's a problem elsewhere in your 4wd setup. You probably have the Automatic Disconnect Differential, and you probably have trouble with the vacuum switch that engages the front diff and makes 4WD happen.
