Testing out the Snorkel - and wheeling at Tahuya

Got to test the snorkel out a little. Still a little gun-shy after totaling her a few years back.

Organized a big Tahuya run on a Facebook page I'm a part of called 4Runners of Washington. Had a decent turn out. Here's some pics.

The Winch and Dash Controls

I bit the bullet and purchased a winch. After reading a write up on 4Wheeler magazine about saving some coin by purchasing a used winch, I decided to give it a try.

Found this used T-max 9,000 winch for sale for $170 and walked away with it for only $100. It free spooled cleanly and didn't look to rough for wear.
After Purchase.jpg
I called T-max service and parts down in California and those guys were a big help. They recommended repacking it with lithium grease and then potentially replacing a pin in the free spool lever - a common maintenance issue. I pulled the pin and saw it was bent. I think they made it out of lead. My plan is to eventually replace the whole free spool lever and mechanism, so I simply straightened it out and put it back in (some recommend cutting a drill bit to size and replacing it).
Winch pulled apart.jpg
With the winch back together I dropped my bumper and got it mounted. I quickly discovered that my bumper doesn't allow for the solenoid box to remain on top. The remembered that they guy I had purchased my plate bumper from had said he had to mount his solenoids up inside the bumper itself. I wondered if this would cause it to ground out somehow, but after talking with the T-max guys, they said there shouldn’t be any issues.
mounted.jpg
The next problem I ran into was after installing the winch and getting it all wired up, I couldn’t get it to work. With no “clicking” sounds coming from the solenoids, I knew it had to be something else. I used a jump wire to jump from where the positive power in came from the battery to the posts where the winch in and winch out control wires were wired in. This allowed me to see that the solenoids were still good. Turns out it was the remote that came with the winch that was bad. Turns out those are notorious for going out. Found a replacement for $13 shipped.

Once I knew the winch worked, I went to work on wiring in the in dash controls. I really liked the switch panels that 12 volt guy sells but after seeing the $1-200 price tag I decided to build my own for less than $30 off amazon. I used a flat trailer wire spool and tied in to the same places the winch control plug was tied into (see diagram).

I ran the cable and wired in a winch control switch, a master kill switch (peace of mind with two kids) and an indicator light that lets me know when it’s got power.

Overall a pretty fun project. I now need to figure out how to get the “accessory switch plate” that I drilled into to stay in place better… it wants to pull out every time I pull up on the kill switch cover.

The finishing touch will be to get a vinyl sticker that says “Plan B”.

Dude! Congratulations man! I saw that contest on 4Runners of Washington on FB. I should have entered, but I am glad that a fellow T4R guy won. That is a sweet collection of gear man. Keep us posted and take pics!

New shoes!

Just installed my new General Grabber X3's. Their 285/70/17's. I was worried a about them fitting so I did the pinch weld mod before getting them mounted just in case. They fit perfectly.

Originally I thought I'd need some spacers or different rims. I currently am running aftermarket icon's that are an 17x8 with a -5 backspacing. Turns out they fit just fine with my 3 inch lift. Couldn't be happier!

Thanks man, yeah, I'm on 4runners of Washington. You coming out for the 4wheel parts grand reopening this Saturday in Lynwood?

Finally installed my Warn 10k winch with spydura line. Had to cut about four inches of my bumper off on each side to widen the opening on the top of the bumper to allow the space needed for the install. After all the sparks had flown, I finally had it mounted up and ready to go. Next project likely needs to be a dual batter setup. Already have one yellow top optima...IMG_1999.jpg

Busy weekend for sure. Replaced plugs and wires and had to order a new coil pack. Cylinder three was misfiring.

After that I installed the transmission cooler (B&M 70268).

Then I replaced my steering rack bushings. I don't know why I keep doing this to myself. These jobs never go as planned. After a stripped bolt and retapping it, the job is finally done. Now to get it aligned.

Installed LED lighting in the rear hatch and wired it up to the rear dome to turn on when the hatch is opened. Sad to see one light doesn’t work. Overall pretty happy with it.

Installed my new 4xinnovations rear bumper. Now to find a matching rim and buy a 5th tire.

Nice. Was shipping quick and how was the install?

Shipping was super fast. Install was very easy. I cleaned it with non-chlorinated brake cleaner and then just hit it with Rustoleoum Hammered finish spray (three to four coats). Done. Grateful to have a buddy help me get it mounted. I really recommend it. Very pleased with the quality.

Nice. i talked to them today and it looks like they have the front and rear bumper in stock along with the sliders. Just don't think i can drop $1800 on everything at once.

How's the suspension holding up with added weight?

I recently put on Bilstein 6112 and springs along with OME 906 so I wasn't sure if i needed to get heavier duty springs.

Yeah, it's a lot of coin to drop to do it all at once. It's nice that there's no lead times for building them though. Love that they had it in stock.

I have Old Man Emu 891's which have held up well. It doesn't sag at all which I've been pretty pleased with. We'll see how it does over time.

4xinnovations is a really solid choice though from a bumper standpoint. Their welds are super clean and the biggest determining factor for me was that I didn't have to leave my car with someone for a week to do a custom build.

Finally replaced the lower ball joints. The outer tie rod ended up bending from the pitman puller. Bit of a pain, but huge peace of mind. Now for an alignment.

Well, axle seals are bad and now my rear brakes are soaked in diff fluid which over stressed my front rotors and warped them. Upgraded to Tundra calipers and rotors. Decided to do my bearings while tearing into the back end and am really glad I did. There is WAY too much play in the bearings. Definitely needed to be changed out after 180k. Once the new bearings and seals are pressed in I’ll install new shoes. Also did the rear diff breather mod while under there.

Loved reading through this thread! I’m buying a 4Runner soon and this is the sort of the build I am going for. Any updates on the build?
