Laid Off... Time to roam!

Well I am a victim of the dip in the Oil & Gas industry. I was laid off last week along with 900+ coworkers. :cry2:
There is some good news... The company I worked for has always taken care of anyone they have released so I have some time and a few extra bucks to burn before I have to find another job.
I plan on leaving Oklahoma City in a couple of weeks and my final destination is Alaska.
So I'm loading up the T4R and heading out on an epic road trip.
I'm taking the mountain bike and a possibly a kayak so tell me where in the U.S. and Canada I should explore, ride, paddle, camp and relax.

So let me hear from all of you!

Bummer about the job but jealous of the time off and trip. I'm hoping if I ever get laid off that they do it in the summer time when my son is out of school so we can take some time and travel around the US.
 
Sorry about the job but that sounds like a pretty damn fun adventure. If I get laid off I'll be heading to Baja for the ultimate surf/fish/camp trip. '

Hey dude sorry to hear about your lay off. Shoot me a PM if you pass through Winnipeg, MB, we'll go wheeling and fishing.
 
Bummer about being laid off. Thankfully the dip in oil prices has not caused lay-offs in natural gas where I work but it is definitely causing budget cuts company-wide

As far as traveling you should come through the southwest for sure. SO much to see. Here in Northern AZ you could stop by the Petrified Forest National Park, Grand Canyon National Park, Sedona (great mountain biking and wheeling), and Havasu Falls (if you can get reservations). Then you can head north into Utah hitting up Lake Powell/Antelope Canyon, Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, Canyonlands National Park, Moab, and Arches National Park. Again, SO much to see and do in the SW.
 
My girlfriend and I are a big fan of Zion National Park. Bryce was cool and all, but had somewhat redundant scenery.

hey matt, I'm a fellow okc ite. where do u normally head out from? i haven't been here long but struggle in finding places to adventure without going all the way to colorado or austin
 
Oh man... Industry wide cutbacks. I am in Portland right now going to bike mechanic school because of similar circumstances where a geologist gets strapped for work. I don't know when you are leaving but if it's next week, let me know and I would ride with you.
Biking is snowed over from laramie Wyoming to salt lake city. Good riding in boise, ID and of course hood river, or. PM me if you are headed up!

Baja sounds like a great Idea! I have a friend who does the Baja with his wife and dogs every year.
Maybe I'll head there after Alaska???

Any ideas on what parts of AK you're interested in checking out? We've got a giant state, but relatively little road, you could drive every single mile of highway within the state in about a week.

I highly recommend it! Especially if you surf or fish. Some of the best camping trips I have had have been down there. Check out San Francisquito, Punta Concepcion, or the 7 sisters if you wanna surf.
 
Sierra - East Side is killer. Lot's of places to go out of Bishop. You have the White Mountains and Death Valley to the East and all of the Sierra to the West. Or go North and do the Rubicon. Mammoth is a mountain bike mecca and there is lots of Kayaking up around Tahoe. You could spend all year there and not go to the same place twice. And when you're baked from riding there are a ton of hot springs to soak in.

I won't be able to get down there that soon, I just got a new job. I'm looking at heading down end up may or early June. If you need any suggestions on places to camp let me know!
