"Lambo" Tire carrier group buy potential

So, "IF" we were to build these for you guys, it would be a one time type of thing. Maybe once a year.

I would need 5 people minimum to put this together. As I have a 4runner here to mock these up on. The bumper would bolt onto the 4runner at first. But, would need outer leg supports to then be welded on. Then you would also want/need to weld the frame mounts to the frame.

It will be the Lambo style carrier. Price is $1500 and figure another $200 to ship it since it would have to go via truck freight.

I would need 100% committed people to do this run of bumpers. They would ship bare metal and be up to the purchaser to paint once they get it. Once we meet the 5 people minimum, you will need to be able to pay for it in full. Turn time would be about a month to build all of them.

These will hold up to a 37" tire easily. Pictured is a 35" tire on Glade's 4runner. You can see his build and get more info here as well:

So, how much serious interest is there in these?

It will have a strut that will aide in lifting and slowing it when closing.

FWIW, I have built a lot of swing out carriers. I have built two of the lambo ones. Every single swing out has way too much movement to it when closed and running down the hwy. Even when dual sheered. Certain sections of freeway will have a swing out feeling like its going to break off the rig. We do NOT have those issues with Lambo ones.

The lambo ones are by far better keeping vibes down. They just don't move much at all. Even with 35s-37s. We are able to preload the main tube to keep them from moving. And because of how the tube and pivot point is designed, they don't allow the tire to move. This way we can have the tire closer to the hatch for better clearance without worrying about it hitting the hatch.

But, I know for most people running a tire carrier on a 3rd gen, these are way overkill. Which is why we don't produce these for the general public unless they are local. Its also why we charge $1500 for a tire carrier bumper as well. The amount of fabwork that goes into these carriers is crazy. We're 4 days into Glade's alone and its still not 100% done yet.

Its honestly not that heavy. The fulcrum point is about 45 degrees. So, you only need to lift it about a foot or so before the load is transferred to the pivot point. With the strut we add, it takes about 75lbs off it too. Meaning, your wife could open/close it without too much worry. But, you still must control it too.

is there a way to lock that carrier in the open position? i see that working just fine on level ground or even side slopes where the right side of the truck is down hill, but if the left side is the down hill side what is to prevent that swing arm to come crashing down and damaging the lift gate or injuring someone or even worse killing someone(that could easily kill a small child climbing out of the back of the truck)... in mot trying to be a negative nancey here, just making sure the box is checked...

It looks great but id be afraid of the weight of a tire and the metal coming back down on me of my hands/fingers. I do want one of your bumpers with a tire carrier though.

Its not possible. Well, I guess if you parked on a 60* off-camber angle, but by then you would have rolled the rig anyway.

The fulcrum point on level groundis 45*. Any point past that, that tire pulls it open anyway. The tire will not allow it to close once its open no matter what angle its sitting on(short of rolling the rig). And, compared to a swing out, that can swing closed at speed on ANY angle other than level, this is much safer. Not to mention that its impossible for the carrier to come loose when wheeling or driving on the street and swinging open to hit a parked car or something.

Yes, a gas strut will be incorporated to help slow the compression down. You guys can watch this video of the previous one I built on my 88' 4runner. It will give you a much better idea of how it works, and how easy it works.

Its hard to imagine it all, but the video will take care of a lot of questions.

for me personally though i think id still like a pin or something that keeps the tire locked in the open position -but thats just me, i like to make things idiot proof. -id want the same done with a swing out, id want some sort of pin to lock it open

Hmmm, one idea - sounds simpler than it might be to actually incorporate, but it would be awesome if the lower strut pin were on some sort of track/channel, so that once the carrier was open, the strut, now that its non-load bearing, could lift/slide out of said track, rather than needing to be pinned.

Its honestly not something that is needed. The strut alone would lock it up to begin with. So, there is no point in adding a 3rd point to keep it open when the geometry alone proves its impossible.

I was only thinking this for sake of laziness and not having to remove a pin each time. But the thought was placing a permanent pin in the strut, and having that sit in a C shaped place holder, and the load of the tire/carrier would hold it in place. Then once the load was removed (carrier opened), the strut would then freely swing out. Idea works in my head... How it works in practice is another question.

Other than that, I really like this design!

Just my 2 cents. I was honestly expecting the price to be lower considering how great of a value the front bumper is. Also, if the price were the same between the CBI and this'n I would go this route

I'm also not doing a massive production run of these, so therefore its a lot harder to keep costs down on. If I were selling 10 per month, I could likely get closer to their price. Unfortunately, that isn't going to happen.

CBI makes a good bumper. If you like theirs better, then by all means buy it. Its only a $200 difference in price.
