Landcruiser oil filter 15600-41010 for the 3.4 liter?

Was it my imagination or was the larger oil filter 15600-41010 made in Japan a good fit for the 3rd gen 3.4 liter? I recall reading that it was desirable large filter for that application or is it too big?

I have no experience with different sizes of filters but if Toyota engineers thought our engines needed a bigger filter, then they would have made them bigger

Save your breath. Internet engineers know more than the manufacturer's engineers when it comes to oil filters and oils and change intervals.

If it threads on, I see no reason why it shouldn't work. The 5VZ oil filter part number has changed a few times since 1996. Originally, the dealer would give me a Japanese-made oil filter. I have that part number somewhere...

I have a few left over from a landcruiser FJ62... I am pretty sure I read that they were a desirable option for our 3.4 gen 3 4runners but that was a while back and cannot recall for sure.

The 15600-41010 filter was replaced by 90915-YZZD3. The 90915-YZZD3 filter will work on a 3rd Gen. It's going to be a tight fit, but it fits.

I use the YZZD3 exclusively. Fits just fine. Holds a little more oil though, 6qts on the nose.

The D3 fits easily, been using them for years. Either the 99 or 02 has a hose or cable that sort of gets in the way of installing but it's no big deal. I didn't need to add any more oil than usual...the filter really isn't much bigger

Both are the same. The YZZD3 replaced the 41010, and both should be the exact same size.

The correct filter for our trucks is the YZZD1. Many here use the YZZD3 as its the same filter, just a bit longer. The D3 fits just fine.

Maybe there's more filter media in the YZZD3 so its an 'equivalent' replacement.

I am going to say too long. How long is that sucker? The longest one I ever got to fit was a K&N HP 2009 before K&N went to crap on their oil filters so I heard.

I am running a Mobil M1-209 at the moment.

The more oil in the system, the longer it takes to get dirty. Also the more heat it can absorb and dissipate, not only in oil volume but in the filter's larger surface area. And the more filtering media surface area, the longer it takes to clog and the more contaminants it can hold before the flow is restricted. Granted, the D3 is not much bigger, but many feel that every little bit helps. Since you're replacing it, and I'm not aware of much of a cost difference between the D1 and D3, I think it's more why would you not go for the bigger filter?

I don't think there is any cost difference. Both are 5.60 or so at my local dealership. Worth every penny.

as long as the base is the same diameter and the gasket is in the right spot and seals, it will work.

The 15600-41010 is not only longer, it is wider by quite a bit. Has anyone actually run one on their 3rd gen 3.4? I added another photo at the beginning showing the bottom/threaded ends.
