Latest Mod: Voice Command factory steering wheel switch

I would like to know if those of us T4R owners who did NOT have steering wheel controls when we purchased our vehicles can ADD them on now by ordering the left control module and harness that runs to the radio. I have upgraded to the Scion HU and would like to add the steering wheel controls. I saw a pic from someone who changed to a woodgrain steering column and it appeared as if one could add the control module to any of the 4 Runner models wheel.

Sorry for the newbie question, but how do you go about removing the blank right hand switches so that you can install the Land Cruiser one.

Thanks

I have a 05' 4Runner with the factory nav and have added the mic and steering wheel voice button. You can order the switch and ribbon cable here http://www.trademotion.com/partlocator/index.cfm?action=getLocator&siteid=840&chapter=ARM8415&appSectionid=2575&groupid=51862&subgroupid=2634&componentid=6614&make=34&model=Land%20cruiser&year=2004&graphicID=8415245&callout=7&catalogid=2 . They are items 7 and 9.

cpguy33,

I what to install the voice command option for my 05 4Runner factory nav. From what I've read in your post, all I need is the switch and ribbon cable (items 7 and 9), is this correct? If so could you give a brief description of how you installed them and also, do you know where to get the instructions for the voice commands? Your help would be greatly appreciated.

First, take off the two plastic trim panels on the side of the steering wheel. The one on the right side has a hole in it for the cruise control. Then remove the screws on each side, the airbag then comes off and you can move it out of the way (you don't have to disconnect it). Then, you'll be able to see the right side panel is held in by one or two screws and 2 pins.

To add the voice command option on the factory nav you will neeed the mic. This mic can be purchased here. All you have to do is plug the mic into the back of the nav and mount it. What I posted earlier was for the stock button on the right hand side of the steering wheel. The nav mic comes with a button so you can use the voice feature by just buying the mic and mounting the button somewhere, but I wanted it to look stock.
The voice command list is attached:

I took a ride in a Land Cruiser today with voice command navigation and now I really want to do this mod. Does anybody have any pictures of where they mounted the microphone? Also, when installing the steering wheel switches, what did you do to prevent the airbag from exploding or do I not have to worry about that?

Can you confirm "mode," "reset" and "cancel" operate the MPG / Temp readout?

Also, I'm a bit confused in this area. I understand that the switch and cable is ordered for the VOICE, however, what part numbers are ordered for the switchs that are labeled "mode," "reset" and "cancel"

I have a 05' 4Runner with the factory nav and have added the mic and steering wheel voice button. I have also replaced the LED's on the switch from green to orange. The LED is not as bright and a slightly different color than the other switches on the steering wheel. But im anal and others woulden't notice it, its not that big of a difference to tell. This was the LED that I soldered in place of the green ones http://www.eled.com/product.asp?catalog_name=LEDs&product_id=EA3528YC As far as the "Mode" and "reset" buttons. There are 3 more buttons that could be on this switch board. They are all labeled "voice," "mode," "reset" and "cancel." I haven't tested it out as to if it would work to change the MPG, temp, etc. display since I thought it was for the laser cruse control. You can order the switch and ribbon cable here http://www.trademotion.com/partlocator/index.cfm?action=getLocator&siteid=840&chapter=ARM8415&appSectionid=2575&groupid=51862&subgroupid=2634&componentid=6614&make=34&model=Land%20cruiser&year=2004&graphicID=8415245&callout=7&catalogid=2 . I have not had a chance to take apart the switch again and test the "mode" and "reset " buttons. These 'buttons" are on the circuit board itself. There is no button for it on the outside. The only button that you can actually push from the outside is the "voice" button. The other two would be in the center slot like where the change track/station buttons are on the other side of the steering wheel. The only car that I have heard of that has the "mode" and "reset" button is the camery, but I dont thnink that the button colors would match ours. When you order the voice switch you get what I got, just the switch for the voice button. but when you open it up and look at the circuit board there are more buttons on it. The outstde plastic peice just has blank covers over the extra switches.

does anyone think you could just order the top part of the button from the left side, the one with the arrows to change tracks, and just flip it to fit the right side? Or is it a different shape? Never really looked at it.

I wonder if you could add the bluetooth module for the prius and make it work? Anyone?

You can't do that unless you change the entire navigation unit. The bluetooth is actually built into the display.

ok, so i think i'm having trouble following this thread..

Can i get the switch panel for my 06' 4runner steerling wheel without replacing the whole wheel? The blank button panel is there, i want to plug a button panel onto it, that currently will do nothing (I have the JBL system) .

What i PLAN on doing is have these buttons control other features such as:

1: All windows open/close rocker (including sunroof & hatch window)
2: Turn on interior lights (dome lights... map lights if possible)
3: flicker the high beams (for alerting other drivers)
4: Turn on any other kind of mood lighting, perhaps hook up some colored led's around the floor of the interior red light district anyone?
5: stereo POWER/MUTE to quickly turn down the stereo volume..etc. instead of having to hold volume down.
6: anything else i can think of :) external mood lights?

How do you get the blank plate off in the first place off the steering wheel? Does it just pull off?

Last night I updated my 4Runner's steering wheel functions. Finally the right side doesn't look so left out! I added the factory "push for Voice Command" for my 4th generation NAV (Solara). Works great, installed in less than 10 minutes (2 torx screws, 1 phillips, and that's it.) There are a few threads around on this already. No need to run wires back to the NAV, you just plug in a 4" factory harness from the left side switches to the right side switches.

The right bank of switches is a Land Cruiser part.. The grey/black plastic is a perfect match for the 4Runner.. but of course the button is green backlit. No worries.. it is just a SM-LED. I just need to figure out the voltage and size.. when back to sodering :) (i'll save that for another day... green is fine for now.)

I currently have an 06 sport with the steering wheel controls on the left side of the steering wheel. I am going to install a pioneer Z1 nav unit. I would like to use the blank buttons on the right side of the steering wheel to control bluetooth and voice commands. Could I do this by using the land cruiser buttons and a PAC-SWI X?

I was planning on using the PAC-SWI PS to hardwire the controls on the left side. Should I keep those hardwired or just use the PAC-SWI X and program all of the buttons with IR?

I have read there is a bit of a delay with the SWIX?
