LawnDart's Build Thread

7" is just too thin a width for 35/12.50R17, I mean it's doable but it's not great for the tire. And we'd need spacers for sure due to the backspacing issue.

I'm going to go with the Ridgeline's in the E-Load Rating.

As for beadlocks, it'll be Hutchinson Rock Monsters, and yes they'll fit. I also considered Method 105s and Trail Ready but I like the no bullshit look of the Rock Monsters. And because I lack self control.

I don't like you.

Can't wait to see the Rock Monsters.... Some serious coin, but hard to beat in the world of BL's.... I have the poor man version on my 80 series, HMMV steel dual BL's... Unstoppable once you don't have to worry about rolling a bead.... Takes your confidence to another level, just keep yourself in check as those stresses will now be transferred else where in the system ;-).

Nice job, next time we roll through PDX I'll have to hit you up. Should be head to Astoria sometime in the not so distant future, with some fun in PDX.

Thanks, it's an unexpected cost on this build, so I'm trying to make the funds happen. Mainly because...I'll need 5...ugh.

The weight issue is also a concern.

Don't anyone jump all over me here..... I know we didn't buy these rigs to be a Prius

Curious what sorta MPG your getting all armored up? Seeing how your more of an expo build and seem to travel a bunch with the rig, that does factor into the overall build sometimes...

Aluminum is your friend when doing an expo build :-)

So I talked with Clay Croft at FJ Summit, and his comment was, "See, normally people go from Rock Crawlers and move to Expedition builds, you're going the other way..."

"...negative, Clay, I'm building both."

The thing is, this rig was meant to crawl into some shitty terrain, but work well for general touring whenever I needed it. As such it's definitely heavy. Right now I get about 14mpg. I bet it'll drop down a bit more but may be negated by the new tires and the re-gear might help stymie that a bit too.

Our 3-year-old LOVES your orange 4Nunner (as he calls them) monster truck. He always wants to see more pics (hell so do I lol). This build has been so much fun to watch!

Good to know, I'm at 15.7 MPG right now... Stock sized duratrac's "E" and a Gobi.... That said the biggest hit I took to MPG seemed to come from the addition of the TRD CAI.

I always seem to bounce between those two "intended design builds" also, but now that I've got a 5th gen, it's become the overland rig and my 80 went full on trail duty.

Plus the 5th gen is the DD and work use rig so I need to keep that MPG number up as high as I can and still advance the build.

Awesome work at hitting the mark in that sweet spot between the two.

Thanks, I never thought I'd take it this far when I started.

The goal is to not make a pre-runner. It'll never be that due to the weight and weight distribution. The goal is to just make a SUPREMELY capable overlander that can basically eat other toyotas.

After reading through this entire thread here is what I have enjoyed. A wealth of information, awesome pictures of rig and scenery, hilarious banter, and much build envy.

Pretty much a perfect thread.

Welp, decided on rims. The factory TRD rims are NOT suitable for 35's, and I didn't want to do fake beadlocks, so we're doing real beadlocks on this build.

Someone stop me!

Are you sure you want to do bead locks? Way overkill IMHO with a lot of odd issues to deal with on a do it all rig on 35s. PITA sort of. I would go with an 8" traditional rim and call it good. Throw on some rock rings if you want to go crazy...

Are you leaning that way for air down traction? If so, try it first on a top heavy rig. It's not that great. Causes a bunch of odd issues even in crawl situations (although the wider track would help). Fine for getting up something, but after that it feels unwieldy IMO. Maybe OK with the wider track...

You will be able to go way beyond the trucks limits without bead locks.

Also, beadlocks are not technically legal in some states (although I doubt you would ever be hassled). Just a lot that can go wrong at speed...... need to keep a very close eye on those bolts.... Your call, but seems odd to me on a do it all build.

It's less for air down as it is for keeping the tire intact in case of a torn sidewall. Most of Oregon's rocks are shale, and because of that if you head into the mountains you really do need E-rated tires, and the paths can be brutal on sidewalls.

Just looked at the Hutchinson Rock Monsters & they look sic....
Silver or Black?

Looks like they have a new style of locking the tire bead as well and DOT approved!

Nice rig!

Correct, DOT approved so completely legal. Most beadlocks are street legal if they're designed as beadlocks and not converted to beadlocks.

We'll go matte black.
