The tires are significantly lighter than their E rated Trail Grappler counterparts. How do they perform? no idea till I get it driving again. But it looks to have a LOT of the performance attributes of the Trails but way better on-road characteristics of the Terras. There's a reason why Nitto is pretty proud of these things.

As for SEMA, we were trying for the Offroad Expo. No one has approached us about SEMA. If someone wants the truck for SEMA, I'd be happy to oblige, but the only deadline we're rushing towards is just to get the truck done and enjoy it.



What are the new tires rated? I will be going with the ridges over my trails come a new set and I too am running an E. Hoping to lighting the load a tad if I can.

Anti-Rock

So I challenged Walt // TAVLLC to do something a bit unique on this build, and maybe someone else has tried this before but I couldn't find it, but we added Currie Anti-Rock torsion bars to the build. Which might be a first for 5th gens at least on this forum:

It did require cutting my exhaust pipe, and we'll see how that affects things, but in november I am going to install heavy duty brake pads and rotors, so we'll probably re-route the exhaust around the anti-rock bar.
 
I love seeing these WIP pics. I know this gets done to trucks fairly often but I think it's interesting to see someone interested in overlanding taking articulation to this level. Also loving the "all business" look of the new wheels, those things are badass!

Thanks. I really challenged Walt on going with the Anti-Rock.

Only downside is that the exhaust had to be cut back significantly due to the shaft of the Anti-Rock basically crossing over where the exhaust used to be. We'll see how it does with fumes, but on the upset...NO WAY TO CRUSH IT AGAIN NOW! lol

But when it gets back home to Oregon I have it scheduled for some more work here locally, where we'll install underbody lighting, heavy duty rotors and pads (this shit is heavy!), and we'll likely re-do the exhaust tubing post-muffler end.

I talked with Clay Croft of Expedition Overland at FJ Summit, and he heard I was going Long Travel, and his reaction was, "It's weird, normally people go from rock crawling to overlanding, but you're going the other way round."

My reaction was, "No, we're aiming to do something that can do both."

In reality it's meant so the rig can carry it's tubby ass, do so comfortably, and stay planted off camber better, and still have good road manners.
 
I also am enjoying seeing this work in progress. It's definitely informative. I might just have to drive out to Oregon and buy a ticket for a ride. lol. I'm sure the last thing on your mind now is more expense but have you thought about doing something to boost horsepower like a super charger? Or do you feel it has enough power as is? Just curious!

I've read your thread and don't recall if you have already done something like this. If you have forgive me, my memory is fried. (My friends tell me I really enjoyed the 70's lol.)

I think you are the first with the Antirock in the back. It is an idea I have had but at the same time still running the stock. I have cut my exhaust back to the point it points down directly behind the axle so I guess I would have the room if I wanted to throw one under mine.

Seeing as you are running the All Pro springs in the rear, I am guessing the rear shocks are an extended travel but not quite up to Metal Tech specs?

Metal tech just removed the sway bars on theirs. How they got their numbers is still a bit disingenuous in my opinion. If we pulled the sway bars off mine we'd be getting similar numbers, but given we're getting more usable travel and with a LOT more load carrying capacity I think we're pretty happy with what we'll get.

But yes we're using extended travel rears, but there's ONLY so much travel you can get with normal trailing arms unless you wanted to re-engineer the frame.

We're not trying to reinvent the wheel.

That said the anti-rock is a new one, and if someone has done it in a 5th gen I'm eager to know.

Does the Currie anti-rock have quick disconnects? It would be so nice to pull the pins when you get off the pavement, secure the sway bar and let the rear end articulate like it should. While there are "quick disconnects " for the 4th and 5th gens, you have to put up with a lot of noise that the rear sway bar makes while it's flopping around back there and occasionally catching on the frame since it is mounted to the axle instead of the frame.

There will be a little noise from our limit straps on the front as well. Total Chaos, along with others, use a spring loaded setup that prevents any slack in the limit straps, as a result sometimes you'll hear the spring being pulled or contracted off road, at least from what I heard.

Interesting. I'd like to see how that works on and off-road.

Yeah I keep going back to getting extended travel shocks for the rear just for the useable reason. I don't want to loose all that up travel when I am not building a crawler.

It's odd there are no adjustment holes in that AR. I know a guy who had an AR on the rear of his FJc with LT and he was not that happy with it. But I never got any real details from him besides he felt it just did not help anything... Not sure it was setup correctly.

Currie no longer makes the adjustment holes, and instead makes the connecting struts adjustable.

Quit being pussies and just pull the sway bars already. Unless you plan the run a RTT and 20 gal of fuel in jerry cans up top full time, the body roll really isn't that bad. The reality is that most of us with significantly upgraded suspensions (read: icon, Radflo, King, Fox etc) run stiff enough springs to mitigate most of the side-to-side anyway. These aren't race cars, and you're not Michael Schumacher.
