LawnDart's Build Thread

I am not sponsored in the slightest. I just think the Baja are built better and I'd like to switch out if I can make it happen financially.

Sponsorship comment was a joke, I have multiple Rigid lights and knew you did, would not have expected enough of a difference to bother switching them out.

Just read back to see what rear coils you're running, looks like Allpro.. guessing their 3.5"?

Does the Currie anti-rock have quick disconnects? It would be so nice to pull the pins when you get off the pavement, secure the sway bar and let the rear end articulate like it should. While there are "quick disconnects " for the 4th and 5th gens, you have to put up with a lot of noise that the rear sway bar makes while it's flopping around back there and occasionally catching on the frame since it is mounted to the axle instead of the frame.

The whole point of the Antirock was to create a long-travel swayer that doesn't need to be disconnected. I ran one on my JK and it was awesome, reduced body roll off-road without reducing articulation. Since Lawndart is running extended bump stops I'm curious to learn what the difference in articulation would be between the antirock versus factory swaybar setup with links to maximize travel within his usable region. Either way, fitting an antirock is pretty slick, I was super happy with how it worked on my jeep.

I think it was a custom 4.5" made for us but I'll have to check.

But yeah you nailed it. It's about gaining maximum usable travel while still maintaining a tame on road performance and reducing body roll off road. The anti rock works great and no one had tried it in a 5th gen before. We had to modify it a little, shortening the arms a tad. But the results are great. We get all the usable travel with really no downside, since we're running extended travel rear shocks.

A few questions for Mr. Dart

Wow. First of all LawnDart, I stumbled onto this forum this past weekend after saying to myself, "self there's something more you have to do with your TRD pro." This thread is awesome and truly and an inspiration of mine of what to do with my 4runner. Anyways after spending this past Fri, Sat, and Sun reading ALL 66 pages of this thread I did have some questions for you if you wouldn't mind answering. Again a bit new to all of this so sorry if my questions are dumb, because well most likely they are, but hey I'm learning.

- Anyways I recently ordered my Gobi stealth rack (steel) and saw that on your rig you have one as well, a CBI rear bumper (steel), Pelfreybilt (aluminum or steel?) front bumper, and various skid plates (steel I assume as well). With all of that said, did you go for aluminum when possible or steel for all of those parts? If steel, did it drastically affect your performance due to the added weight?

- What fender flares do you have? I read earlier in the thread that they were Bushwacker fender flares but after taking a look at what they have online, they don't look the same.

- What was your final set up for your suspension? If I read correctly you put 2x King coilover 2.5s, 2x King bypasses 2.5, ARB 4.88 airlocker, Total Chaos long travel kit in the front. In the rear 2x King 2.5 rear shocks, Nitro 4.88 re-gear, Currie anti-rock torsion bars, and some brand of custom made springs. Correct? Also, this gentleman wizard mechanic named Walt from New Mexico, does he have a shop or do work on other 4Runners for hire?

Lastly, again I really appreciate any insight you can give and truly you are an inspiration to most of us here on the forums.

PS - If you haven't purchased the Goose-Gear storage module, what are your thoughts on the Scout Overland camping kitchen/storage? Might want to check that out.

The only thing I can answer for LD is that Walt does have a shop and web site: Welcome | Tav LLC

Very tired. Walt and I just left the shop at 9pm.

We got done everything but the ARB manifold kit for the front air locker, nor did we get the switch wired up. So that'll have to be done by my local shop in Portland mid November.

I'll also need to install the pelfrey battery tray sometime this weekend when I can get some help pulling that giant odyssey battery out.

I also decided I think I'm gonna convert all my lights to Baja designs.

Someone's been hanging out with Defcon I see. Man, what I would do with that dude's bank account.

If you sell the Rigids, I'd be interested in the smaller SR bar. I'm right up the road in Seattle.

Uh wow

Wow, I'm speechless, I agree, we all give up shut down the site, it's over you win, going back to my garage and think hard about my life.... did I mention I just ordered some interior lights upgrade

Really man that looks absolutely amazing!!!!!

Yep I crashed with Sean and we took photos and touched tips...

Pelfrey aluminum bumper and steel ARB and RCI skids. I mainly went steel in the skids, sliders, and rear bumper because I tend to bang those up off-road more than any other components. The front could be aluminum because I was mainly concerned with animal strikes and getting better ground clearance, not smashing shit.

Fender flares are the stock unpainted ones. I opted NOT to use the bushwackers for aesthetic reasons. Who knows I may change my mind.

And yep, as mentioned it's Walt at TAV LLC in ABQ, NM. And he does all assortments of vehicles and their customization.

I've never tried the Scout Overland setup. I was down at Goose Gear yesterday planning a storage setup for my camera gear that would go to the left of my ARB fridge. Hope that helps.

Hung out with Overland Bound today. I'm working on a few articles for them after we discussed it over a few drinks, then had some show and tell:

For some dumbass reason I opted to take Highway 1 from the bay area to Eureka CA (My plan was to go up to Crescent City but the trip took waaaaay longer than I thought).

My review of Highway 1: I did not skip arm day. Driving a long travel 4Runner through the coastal roads was both pretty exhausting, and pretty awesome. Amazing little towns only 2-3 blocks long, sandwiched between vistas that are hard to describe.

I should have said somthing[emoji57]

Hwy 1 is much better on a motorcycle or sports car. Although KDSS would have helped you! A beautiful drive none the less. I wish I could do that drive every year!

How was the weather? Was it sunny?

Pissed rain for most of the time. KDSS? I'm sorry I don't speak standard travel suspension now!

Did you cut back over to I5 or what did you end up doing? That drive is beautiful, a few good breweries there too like Mad River and Eel River.

I took Hwy 1 up till Leggett, and then finally hit 101.

1 just took so long to get north. It says the speed limit is 55, but hell if I could make those turns faster than 35-40mph.

That's 4-5 hours on a good day. It takes me about 8 hours to get to crescent city from here.

Yep I let google calculate it and it assumes you can actually do 55+mph on Hwy1 which is bullshit because some of the turns are super sketchy and it was pouring rain for most of the trip.

What's the traffic like on that part of the highway?

Almost non-existant, when I took that photo I didn't see another car for about 45 minutes. I sat there knowing I wouldn't make it to Crescent City on time, so I had some iced coffee and enjoyed the late afternoon light.
