LBJ replacement on 2000 4runner

I know there is many forums here about this and take a lot to read I just need a simple answer do the ball joints on the 2000 4runner have the same problem because the recall only states 01 and 02 4runners I call the Toyota dealership with my vin and they say there is no recall for it so I want some info from you guys.

All 3rd gens 1996 thru 2002 lower ball joints have the same issues. It's a design problem that can't easily be corrected.

They are correct the recall only covers the late years I think 01 and 02.

Exactly what Brillo said. I will add that lower ball joints are considered a wear item and the generally accepted safe replacement interval is every 10 years/100k miles for OEM lower ball joints and lower ball joint bolts. It’s a lot cheaper to replace them before they fail and potentially cause a lot of additional damage.

It is also very critical to get the right bolts and to also torque them to the correct torque specs too!

That's a great read/study but potentially too much information for a new owner with a stock vehicle.

If you've never changed the lower ball joints, order them from your local dealer, or Joe Joe on Facebook, and get 8 new bolts, correct for your year, and have them professionally installed if you're not sure of the work required. It's not rocket science but it is a critical life-safety part.

Since you’re referring to the recall, the answer to your question is no. The 01-02 ball joints may have been scratched when they were manufactured which could lead to issues.

That said, all 3rd gens seem to have the possibility of shearing which is what previous replies are discussing - and not related to the recall.

Oops, well here.

OP, when you order a set of eight bolts order this one: 90105-10505

You'll just need to torque it to 59 foot pounds. This is the one that I ordered and based off of the information in the thread I like I think it's the best choice. Or one of the top two best choices.

The problem with using tacoma or tundra ones is it will require changing the outer tie rod ends as well to match and it will decrease your turn radius. No one has proven that tacoma/tundra lower ball joints are any stronger, and they all have the same failures that 3rd gen 4Runners do.

The problems that people experience with factory lower ball joints tends to come in one of two forms:

1. ignorance of maintenance and replacement cycles, or

2. stressing them beyond their design capabilities, read Wheeling them to extremes.

Dealing with a 00' limited with 171k, with shot suspension and new tires that has a little bit of vertical suspension play going over driveway cut lips and such.. Need to visually inspect the LBJs but im thinking of having um replaced when i have the lift installed..

If you don't know the age/mileage/maintenance history of the parts involved I would definitely replace LBJs when lifting the vehicle. UBJs, and LCA bushings possibly as well if they fail inspection.

OEM only. Design flaw, maybe? But you'll get the most mileage out of OEM. My 01 has 197k on the clock and I just replaced mine, they could have probably gone another 50k easily. If you value your life or truck, don't go with Moog or any other aftermarket LBJ.
