LC coil swap??

Ok so this may sound like a dumb question but I'm looking at doing the Landcruiser coil swap but I have a few questions/request.

#1 do the coils change with time? What do I need to get for my 2nd gen 1994 that i'd like to get about 1.5-2 in of lift out of.

#2 what quality should i get (med/heavy duty) I don't want it to squat when i put weight in the back

#3 what sort of shocks do i need. I know the distance increases, but what shocks and whats a good brand. (I think rancho is good)

#4 I'll have BJ spacers as well for the front obviously, but should i do new torsion bars?

#5 steering dampener? Should i get it? It was listed on OME lift kit. (not fully understanding its purpose.)

Thanks for your help guys!

No dumb question, except the one you don't ask.

No they don't change.. LC coils give between 3-5 inch lift depending on what year stock coils between 95-2000.

#2 what quality should i get (med/heavy duty) I don't want it to squat when i put weight in the back

stock LCs as I said, no squat.

#3 what sort of shocks do i need. I know the distance increases, but what shocks and whats a good brand. (I think rancho is good)

Get Rancho 9000s for shocks & stabilizer, they are hydrolic & best for offroad I think.

#4 I'll have BJ spacers as well for the front obviously, but should i do new torsion bars?

Don't get spacers. Too many problems. Depending on your rear lift, adjust up for the few inches on the torsions for level ride height and buy the longer shocks, again, rancho.

Not sure on this one, I haven't chevked it out yet, but assuming its to keep a stock steering radius, etc.

i thought it only gave about 2" of lift? I don't want 3-5 :/ What's the issue with BJ spacers?
Thanks for your reply just curious. I'm just looking for a mild lift for more articulation.

Nah on stock LC coils from like a 95 or so, its 3". If you want less, get the body lift for the rear or what not. Later years is like 5. & bj spacers cause more stress, etc. on them and your steering. Itll have you replacing it all more frequently. I'm not extremely familiar with them, so someone whobhas them can tell you the pros/cons better on bj spacers.

As far as I know, BJ spacers would be better than cranking the torsion bars. The only issue with the spacers is the increased angle of your CVs. Manual hubs will eliminate that issue. I have the rear ome lift coils and shocks and will be getting bj spacers and manual hubs soon.

And as far as the mpg's.. I doubt you would notice any difference unless you got bigger tires

Which in turn, I assume as I've seen others post, that it adds additional wear & tear on the CV axles, ball joints (and I believe the steering/suspension system too, but correct me on everything if I am wrong).

& Yeah, as Runner4 posted, the mpg shouldn't be noticed, but by spacing the tires out more, you have the decrease in ride performance and steering, etc. as I've seen on a 93 F150 Custom as well. Doing bigger tires without a gear ratio change would result in less mpg, unless you got bigger gears (numerically speaking) then your mpg should stay the same, as the gears are used to keep the engine from working harder to push the extra load.

lift

SilentYoda, LC coils gave my 95 nearly 4" of lift in rear. If you only want 2-2.5" you are looking at OME springs or installing coil spacers for 2"lift. I dont recommened coil spacers on your old stock coils because they are already worn out. Either way you will most likely need new shocks. I am currently running OME coils and shocks with Sordi bj spacers with swayaway torsion bars relaxed. This is far better than the stock ride ever was.

I was thinking about doing the whole OME swap with torsion bars, but are the bars specially made for giving lift without the BJ spacers? Also how are your BJ spacers? im guessing you have 1.5 or 2" spacers? Do they mess anything up? (drive angle, binding, etc) The reason for me asking is my shocks all around are pretty bad, like shot bad haha :lmao: but since i have to replace those and also the fact that i have the bad rear sag i want to replace them anyways so i was looking at a very mild lift to make it sit about the height of most trucks. (I like riding a little higher and a little rougher, but not F350 with an empty bed rough if you know what im talking about haha) I also don't really want any rear sag when it's loaded with stuff either so I'd probably go heavy duty on the rear coils. Debating on front torsion bars replacing. (how hard are they? My dad's my mechanic and he's been one since he was younger than me haha so over 40 years. He's taught me for the past 6 years thankfully)

The torsion bars don't really have to be changed. They don't give additional lift as far as I know, they are just heavier. (the lift comes from cranking them and the less prestress, the better your articulation) Thats why I went with the swayaways because they are not as heavy as some. Compare the diameter of the different bars you are looking at and don't go with the thicker ones, they may make your ride to stiff. As far as the rear coils, OME told me to go with the med unless you are carrying a constant 450 lbs. I have a plate bumper with tire swing out and aux. fuel tank and the med handle that without any sag that I can see. Interestingly enough, the med are longer than the heavies but a little thinner per OME rep. Med with bj spacers put rear about 1" higher than front on my 95 4r. (giving about 2" lift in back and 1" lift in front) Torsion bars aren't hard to replace because we don't have the rust problems that other areas have. I hit mine with pb blaster a few days before and they came right off. Remember that they are right and left specific . The OME coils and shocks are designed to match each other for better ride quality.

Torsion bars can be adjusted to.give you more height on the front end, so you can crank them up, and buy the longer shocks, no bj spacers needed.

notice any issues with the BJ spacers? I might try the lift without spacers and then decide if i want to up with spacers. As per med/heavy, i carry tools and survival supplies and chains and etc in the back. But it all only probably adds up to maybe 300lbs at most i'd imagine. I plan to haul a boat with it too. So maybe I'll just use medium than.

EDIT: I'm just concerned about cranking the T-bars up :/ it's unsettling to me.

bj spacers give 1-1.5" lift and more articulation. Cranking torsion bars gives lift but sacrifices articulation. I have had no adverse effects from bj spacers, in fact I was able to get less angle on my cv's by adding spacers and relaxing the torsion bars.

I wouldn't crank the torsion bars. It's a bad idea. It throws off the geometry of the front suspension. It also causes uneven tire wear and premature wear on other parts.

If I were to get the OME springs would I still have to get new shocks?

I have the LC coil lift.. picked them off a 95 LC.. gave me 3" lift in the rear.. I also have BJ spacers in the front I have had this set up since Septemper of last year so far everything great.. only thing bad about the BJ spacer is it will tear up ur ball joint eventually.. stiffer ride cv axel does tilt a little more but doesnt bind.. If your going to mess with the torsion bars get a diff drop.. you need extended brake lines and I got 4" capable Skyjacker Shocks.. Think I paid $150 for shocks.. $80 for bj spacers & Dif Drop kit (that I still have not used) $50 for the LC coils $200 on wheel spacers to avoid tire rubbing on the upper control arm..

As soon As Im ready Ill be getting that rough contry 5" Lift.. I need to focus on sway bar disconnects, Lockers, and armor right now..

by the way I believe OME has a 2" lift for $300 comes with everything except the shocks I think

you can check your articulation to see if your shocks have enough travel but you don't want your shocks to reach their limits before the rest of your suspension, this will cause damage.

If I install LC coil, and want to use Rancho 9000 , what part No. of it?
because Rancho 9000 have many kind of size for many 4X4, I just don't know which one i should buy, I want their travel to be longer, please help!
thanks!
my 4x4 is 1997 T4R 3Rd gen.
