Leak?

Just returned from the car wash where it took them 30 minutes to wash off the mud from this weekend. Previously I had mentioned a leak in the front and from the rear side windows. Today I noticed the headlines in the rear corners was ever so slightly wet. Is it possible that having the roof rack torqued down too hard could be causing a gap allowing water in the vehicle thru the roof rail system?

There is no way the water can get inside from the roof rack or any parts of it unless it's an aftermarket roof rack. The factory roof rack does not have any part of it that protrudes through the interior roof. The sunroof is always the most likely source assuming you have one.
 
good to know that the roof rails arent causing it. it def isnt coming in thru the sunroof. guess a trip to the dealership next oil change will help locate it.
 
I'm having these same issues. Is yours leaking on the drivers side? The thing with mine is that I don't have a sun roof so it cannot be leaking from there. I'm highly confused by this.
 
mine leaks at the rear of both rear side windows, and the driver and passenger windows up towards the front. i dont really mind that part as its only in the car wash. what i am concerned about is the h2o that is showing up on the headliner.

There's your problem. Maybe if you took the time to hand wash the vehicle with water that isn't regurgitated from other washings or hitting the seals as if it were from a powerwasher, there'd be no leaks.

But hey, what do i know...I don't even yet own a 4R.....:moon::snacker::D.....yet.....
 
Thank u for chiming in. Headed to dealership today where the loaner will be a sequoia. Most likely will have to have seals replaced
 
Not sure how a factory roof rack would be mounted without going through the roof? I have one and had a leak through one of the mounting screws. There are screws in the rail, and I had one fall out apparently, or someone "borrowed" it...because I had a leak on the rear of my headliner- coming straight through that screw hole. So if the dealership can't find anything, i'd check those screws and maybe take em out and add some silicone or something on the threads- at least make sure they're there and tight.
also, it could be coming in through the sunroof and if you have a clogged drain tube, it could be overflowing to other parts of the roof.
 
Just got a call from the dealership. Sure enough, a couple of those factory screws had fallen out of the factory roof rack. Damnit!!! The good news is that it will be fixed with a couple of new screws.
The good news is that none of the seals were bad and the headliner is in good shape still.

I dunno about that, when i bought my 99 t4r brand spankin new, it leaked from the roof rack bolts into the interior and the damn dealer blamed it on me sayin i excedded the weight... It was brand new and I never used it and they charged me $200 to seal it with some caulk .......
 
we all now know that there is in fact a way for water to leak in thru the factory roof rack...IF those bolts come loose or fall out the seal is compromised.

Good to know. The roof is not a single piece of sheet metal though. There is an exterior and interior with an interspace to allow for bracing and brackets, as well as roof top mounted fasteners. I guess if the roof rack is installed factory instead of dealer installed, then the interior roof line would be seamless with no holes drilled out? Makes me think twice about getting an aftermarket roof rack now. Anyone wonder how these screws are just popping out though?
 
MYSTERY SOLVED. There are 4 endcaps for the factory roof rails. When I put the rack back on, I clipped the end caps back on the end of the roof rails WITHOUT screwing the screws back in, thereby leaving an open hole. They didnt just pop out, turns out I left them out. That was an expensive lesson.

Sure it does. I have mine off right now to repaint it before mounting my aftermarket roof rack and there are around 8 bolts on each side of the rail and there are 4 holes with plastic clips in them that I'm thinking might be for running wiring through or something. If the rubber seals and grommets are old water could easily be getting through one of the bolts or plastic clips.
