Leaking CV boots and axle question...

My last oil change/tire rotation I noticed one of the CV boots leaking. Now everything I know about boots and axles I've read here in the last two days.

It sounds like I can replace the clamps and regrease.

How would I know if I've done damage or the axles need to be replaced. I do alot of highway miles and just want to be confident before I head out next.

Just had the same issue. Here is a link to a great thread in the "Suspension" area of this site:Check CV Joints. I posted ion that thread a link to the FJ Cruiser Forums that had a great write up on how to do this and what you need. I followed it to the T and all went great. I have 92k miles on my truck, and I am sure that the leaking had been going on for a while now. I noticed some discoloration inside the joint (metal was black aka: Looked burnt) but the rollers (bearings) seemed fine. It takes a lot to blow one of these up, so unless you see metal filings or broken parts INSIDE, you will be ok.

By the way, if it is the inside boot, then just get some new clamps on both of the inside ones even if the other side isnt leaking, as it will soon! The outer one has better clamps on it for some reason (mainly the smaller one), so I wasnt worried about replacing those.

Trust me Jeff....it is a pain in the b@lls! Make sure you can get the truck into a comfortable spot (ie-sitting) to clean it out. You will be there for a while.
