Leaking valve stem?

I have a slow leak in my tire. I snugged up the valve stem housing and the leak got slower. I didn't want to tighten it too hard. I replaced the valve stem and that didn't help.

My question is can I remove that valve stem housing and but some plumber tape on it to fix the seal without removing the tire.

I don't want to have the wheel taken off unless I have to and I don't to pay for new sensors. I don't care if the light on the dash stays on. I check the tires periodically anyway.

I have read that I can just replace the stock valve stem with an old fashion rubber one, is this true? I can get an Oring and other piece from Toyota for about 10 bucks to maybe fix it but the tire still has to come off and I have to order it and wait.

Aren't our TPMS sensors attached the inside portion of the valve stem, tucked into the tire and rim?

If so, there's no way you'll be able to pull the valve stem off and replace it without unmounting the tire because the valve stem and TMPS are all one unit once they are attached together.

And I believe you should be able to remove the whole TPMS unit and just run regular old school rubber stems. Just have to deal with the TPMS receiver not getting a signal and the light on your dash.

To replace the entire valve stem the tire has to come off enough to remove the sensor but I was wondering if I could unthread the stock valve case from the outside, rap some plumber tape around the threading and reinsert it to stop the leak.

I doubt that'll do you any good. The valve cover case (if we're on the same page, the silver beauty cover over the valve stem) shouldn't have any effect on a leak.

From my experience, most leaks are a from a poor fit between the stem and sensor itself (bad gasket) or from a bad schrader valve.

I already changed the Schrader valve and that didn't fix it. The valve cover case screws into a fitting that comes out of the rim (the sensor I would think). I was able to tighten that from the outside and that slowed the leak, I don't want to tighten it too much.

Sorry but the tire has to be pulled from the rim if you don't want a recurring problem.

You may want to kill the TPMS too.

Just bring it to a tire shop. It'll take less than 15 minutes and they may not even charge you for the repair. Some things just aren't worth fooling with.

have you sprayed some soapy water on it, to verify that is where the leak is coming from?

you might have a nail elsewhere in the tire...

Get them to install a new TPMS service pack and check the tire for leaks. A reputable tire shop should have the TPMS service packs on hand.

[MENTION=137652]jfry008[/MENTION] is right - these are what you need. I worked on a tire/sensor set up like this today - it is pretty simple and would take the shop all of 15 minutes. Just do it and be done, shouldn't cost much at all! Or delete the TPMS!

I would say tire shop as well. Those aluminum stems tend to corrode and can leak from a few different spots. The do break easily if over tightened. Any decent tire shop will have replacement stems that can be swapped onto your existing tpms sensor, or a complete sensor/stem assembly for around 30 bucks.
They will not have to remove the tire, just break the bead and squish the tire out of the way in order to swap stems. This is the quickest way and no need to rebalance the tire because it hasn't move on the rim.

It hasn't leaked since last night after retighten the stem. I am sure it will leak again. I am sure I will end up at them shop getting it replaced. I will just get a regular valve stem.

in addition to that, use a good cap and tighen it. it well help keep the pressure even if the stem don't work.
