LED cluster weirdness........urghh

Hey all,

Got my LEDs swapped out for white ones. Loving it. However, started having strange problems with them. A couple of days ago on a 2 hour trip, the LED behind the 30mph mark AND the "box" (I don't know what else to call it) that outlines the PRND321 marker, went out. After about 30min, they came back on. Fast forward to today, I drove to see my parents (1 hour trip) today. Started out ok, everything was lit, 5 min later, same LEDs went out, then about 10 min after that, most of the LEDs on the tach went out was well as other LED on the Fuel/Temp gauge section. The tach eventually turn back on before I arrived, but still.

Bad LEDs? Could be, but it's a strange coincidence that this happens. Are the LEDs somehow connected?

I've talked with Alex (emelianenkov). He's going to swap out all the LEDs for new ones (Awesome guy). Hopefully that is the problem. BUT, the reason I'm making a thread on this, is maybe someone else went through the same problem? Maybe there is a short somewhere? If DARKIE3495 could chime in, maybe him or anyone else who performed the swap had this or something similar happen? Anyway, thanks in advance!!

Sorry about that and I just realized that the only LEDs I've had problems with are the white ones. I've never had issues with my customer's colored LEDs. Maybe it's the manufacturer.

I know the LEDs are "wired" in series, so when one bugs out, it'll take out the others it is connected to. They're typically in groups of 2-3. I have seen a PCB board in person in my truck having flickering issues with white LEDs even though all the solders were perfect. I suspect crappy LEDs.

How I check faulty LED situations;

I sit in my truck looking at these waiting for however long the customer noted they were driving until the LEDs started acting up.

Of course, I have a 110% parts and labor warranty in case this happens, but I hope this problem isn't very common. A few of the clusters done with this batch of LEDs have come back with "flickering" issues, so I'm going to a different supplier.

Sorry for the inconvenience Ed, and I'll get all your white LEDs swapped to new LEDs from a different supplier to see if that fixes that. Sorry again!

No worries Alex, when modding, crap happens. It's very cool to know you stand behind your services even though it's not your fault. :bigok:

So some(all) are wired in series? Well, that explains why when 1 starts to act up, the rest go on strike.

After dinner: I went to my truck just to see........... whatta ya know? All the LEDs light up perfectly fine

I think it's the LEDs cause all of my solders are amazing lol.

My warranty is lifetime. No questions asked, I just want my customers happy cause I put my name on my work, and I take quality VERY seriously! I stand by my work 110%. I'll fix it or replace it (unless you break it)
 
I'll chime in even though it sounds like Alex is going to take care of you.

I've seen this in person and oddly enough it is was with white LEDs. The work was done by someone else and was brought to me to fix. Once I opened the cluster up, I found that the solders were clean, just bad LEDs. If it was a bad solder job it would either not light up or flicker consistently, not turn on and off intermittently.

Fyi, I've only used oznium surface mount LEDs for all my cluster jobs and I've gotten a few bad batches in the past. Unfortunately, some do not present themselves during initial function testing.

That's exactly my problem! I test them with a power source, but often they'll work initially but then problems develop after a few minutes. I don't have time to spend 30 minutes holding contacts on each LED lol.

Consensus: bad LEDs. Ok, Alex, I think the replacement LEDs will do the trick! :cool:

...............now to explain to the wife why she can't drive the runner next week......................
