LED Light Position (diode position in projectors)

Hey guys,

Bought a set of these LED's and got them for less than $30 but get great reviews. I know they are not $300 lifetime LEDs but they have the same premise right? They have two sides of the bulb with the diodes.

Here is my question... in the projector housing in the 14+ 4runners, what is the best way to position the diodes? up and down, left to right, doesn't matter (I don't think this is right as the output in one position is just crap).

Let me know what you have experienced. Being that i can adjust the collar in three positions right now i have them at about 5 & 11 o'clock and seem ok but wanted to see what others have.

I would think you would want the LED's positioned in the same orientation as the filament of the stock halogen bulbs. Put that bulb back in and identify how it is positioned and duplicate on the LED.

You will never get perfect output since the two types are not interchangeable but its worth a try.

For projector housings, the general recommendation is to have the LED chips positioned so they mimic the location of the original halogen filament as closely as possible. In most cases, that means the diodes should face left and right (roughly the 3 and 9 o’clock position), not up and down.
When they’re positioned incorrectly, the beam pattern usually gets scattered, the cutoff becomes messy, and overall output can actually look brighter nearby while performing worse down the road.
 
Because the OE projector in the 5th gen T4R is a non-standard side mount bulb projector it's trial and error. Not all LED's are created equal and there's a reason some sell for $30 and some sell for $300. The R&D and design characteristics of the $300 bulbs is far superior.

You will have to put them in to see what your beam pattern is. I don't remember if mine are un/down or side/side. I'd start with them configured up/down and if you get a weird shadow turn them side/side.
