Has anyone thought about trying to get automotive grade LEDs and making them work with a HID projector set up? I remember a lot of guys said before that it wouldn't work, but it seems like this is how its typically done these days.
I got a flashlight from the NRA recently and it has a very well built "dimmer/focus" dial, you can adjust it so that at 3ft its so crisp you can literally see the actual light emitting portions of the diode including and the lines from the non-emitting portions in between on the silicon die (it looks a bit like a box with vertical lines, I tried to take a picture but the camera didn't like it.) If you adjust the dial it will focus to the point of being a very bright, consistent circle of light; I took the light apart and internally its just a domed lens with a mechanism to move the LED closer and further away from the domed lens. I would assume the same could be done with a projector where you find the appropriate "setting."
I wish I had a spare Corolla or Avalon Headlamp to gut the LED out of and test with, I was just curious if anyone has experimented with it?
