any one know by chance if the LED tail lights of the 2006-present would work on a 2005 sr5?

just looking into lighting options for emergency lights (being a firefighter) and whelen sells a pattern box that creates flash patterns in LED tail lights. really want to get that, would be a nice clean look.

2006+ LED tails will fit early 4th gen 4Runners. You will also need the wiring harness that goes from the LED tails to the body electrical wiring. A few members here have swapped 2006+ LED tails on their 2003-05 4Runners. Member AlexJet was the first I believe.

what specifics would i need to get and what might it all cost me. not on a tight budget...but always looking to save money.

the local toyota dealership laughed when i asked this question after a service visit. something i really want to pursue.

also how difficult would it be to do the swap myself? not an electrical genius but do have a few friends that are always willing to help. i just want to know if i should even attempt to do it myself or just take it to a professional or dealership.

The part numbers for the taillights are 81551-35320 (for right) and 81561-35280 (for left). parts.com has the taillights for $142.01 each, with the bulb sockets running $4.46, $5.58, and $5.55 for the center, lower, and upper, respectively. rockauto.com has the taillights for $74.89 each.

I haven't used either site yet so I don't know what the shipping is, or reliability of the business itself. I haven't heard any complaints as of yet.

The swap should be straight forward, but I can't say from experience yet. I plan on this swap after the holidays. I'm focusing on the new Katzkin leather I just bought for my 4Runner right now.

FYI, you can also replace the headlights in the 03-05's with the projectors from the 06-08's. I'm in the process of obtaining all the parts necessary for that right now.

If you need a how to, do a search. There's plenty of info on this site. Good luck and welcome.

Let me know if you get a set and where. Im also looking at this mod. Also let me know if the Whelen set up works, Im a FF as well and it would be a great way to add visibility on a scene.

According tot he Rockauto site, the parts are "economy quality" and from "various manufacturers." It's not likely that they are OEM.

Just a side note: the LED tail-lights on our '08 are THE brightest I have ever seen! I had the wife step on the brakes and looked directly into them and they pretty much burned out my retinas...

pattern box

thanks for all of your help. im ordering the tail lights through a friend at a body shop. so ill only pay wholesale. not sure on the price yet but im sure it is better than stealership prices.

4runr30: i will let you know how the pattern box looks. im using it because i want to try and avoid running lots of wires through the interior or drilling any holes in my beautiful new 4runner. i've seen it in other cars and it works great.

no additional wiring is needed. all you do is swap over a few bulbs and some sockets and you are good to go. its pretty easy to figure out when you have the parts side by side.

Has anyone had any luck or input on the rockauto.com tails? If they work the sound like a great deal. Im not worried if they are OEM toyota lights as long as they perform. Thanks
