Less Stiff Option for 2” Rear Lift Than OME 906

Any LC or Tundra rear spring options with or without trim packers that will soften my ride and keep height around 2”? I have 881s in front.

Thanks!

Land Crusier coils are 3.5”+ Lift, and Tundras have rear leaf springs. Stock T4R coils with a spacer (soft coils; don’t handle extra weight well) would work, or FJ Cruiser coils (a little higher spring rate but supposedly not a harsh ride) are in that 2” lift range. There’s a couple threads floating around, this being the one that came to mind.

you can use the rear springs out of a 5th gen 4runner. I've got a friend that did it and he says it rides great.
I have 5th gen rear springs (2014 off road premium, I think) on mine with 10mm trim packers on both sides, measures right at 22" hub center to fender lip with no weight. Stiffer than stock, for sure - not sure how they compare to 906's, since I haven't experienced those.

edit: Funny thing is that I am planning on going to 906's in the future...

What shocks are you running? I run OME 891s and Bilstein 5100s and it's really nice and soft in the rear. I was previously running the springs with the OME shocks and it was way too stiff.

Think it will soften up with some 5100's in the rear?

I'm not sure about that. What are you currently running? Stockers? I think Billys are stiffer unless yours are somehow dead.

I have 906s with the Billy 4600s and I do find them on the stiff side, bearable but stiff. I asked the exact question you just posed to Bilstien customer service. They said that there is not MUCH difference in rates between the 4600s and the 5100s. Main difference is length. They didn't think upgrading would improve my comfort.

I'm wondering if the answer is something other than Billys.

I'm running 5100's from the Tundra with the 906. It flexes great!

The fronts are also 5100's but with stock Coils, sure it's the cheapest lift, but I'm very happy it. Wish it could fit the sequoia.

I guess I answered wrong, idk how harsh yours is, but 906/5100 combo is a smooth and controlled ride. IIRC at first is was harsh, but over time after break in, it really shines offroad.

My stiffness issue is on 40 mph back roads where I feel every little bump-just up-and-down, not crashing over bumps. I did not change the stock shocks that were in there. Just installed the springs.

I am running '99 tall coils with Daystar 1.5" spacers and Billy 5100s. Not a popular move to run 99s and spacers but it honestly sits and rides pretty nice! Sits pretty level with my 881s on the first perch of 5100s though it can sag a bit with lots of weight. The plan is to move to OME coils or something else good under weight in a few more months but there's not a huge downside to my current setup.

The OME 906's do ride stiff, there's no denying that. But, if you keep some weight in the back of your truck (tools, subwoofer, gear, whatever) it helps a lot.

In fact, the 906's absolutely shine when loaded down. My truck rides so damn smooth while I'm towing my boat. It also rides very nice when you are on the trail.

I have the KYB gas A just struts in the rear and they have been holding up very well.

The biggest thing that helped improved my ride was ditching the 10 ply, rock hard BFG KO tires I had on. They had the worst ride of any tire I've ever owned. I switched to Falken Wildpeak AT3W's and it's a night and day difference.

For offroad and wash board roads, I run 10psi in my nittro trail grapplers... They are a 10ply and I don't have bead locks. Never lost a bead yet. The ride is night/day... I will grant that. But if I don't air down, and run full psi, it takes 30min for the 5100's to soften up on the trail, or for me to get used it...

Boy, I wish this was more straightforward.

So it sounds like an 890 or even 891 will ride softer than a 906 but they will lift the truck up higher with no weight - correct? My 265/75-16s already look small with the 906s - that’s why I’d be happy with same height and softer ride.

Intrigued by the 5th Gen rear springs and a spacer but have not heard from enough people that they are indeed as soft as stock.

Any other options?

Thanks

Ride quality is so subjective it impossible to tell what you’re going to like or dislike unless you bolt it on and try it in the conditions you are wanting to use it in. I’ve had a couple different setups on mine and some of the most popular ones on here were horrible. They work great on road and big bumps but were terrible for most Offroad stuff. It sucks to hear but trial and error is the only way to get it perfect. Plenty of people sell barely used stuff, shocks and springs, because they are in the same situation as you. Buy and sell some used stuff until you find the right combo.

I've got the 5th gen rear springs and like them, they're nice and controlled and handle weight decently. You could also look into FJ cruiser springs, I believe those yield a similar height to the 906 and are supposed to ride well. As others have mentioned replacing shocks will help too. New OEM rear shocks are not that expensive if you go the 5th gen route and I've heard some have good results with the 906 paired with KYB Gas-A-Just.

I’m looking to sell some FJ rear springs that netted me around 1.5-2” lift.

I’d say they were stock equivalent in terms or ride/comfort, never felt harsh to me. For the money was one of my favorite mods as it got rid of my 150k saggers haha. Full transparency, added these with 5100s so that may have added o ride quality as well.

$50 + shipping from 33928 if you’re interested. :)

Oh, and I had 5th gen springs too and went back and forth on what I wanted to use. 5th gen springs sit a tiny bit taller, but are thinner in both metal diameter and spring diameter. Ultimately chose the FJ as it was shorter/stockier but netted as much lift as the 5th gen tears.
