I have Geico and they contract with safelite. Patches are free and replacements happen if there is a crack that extends further than a dollar bill in length and have a $50 deductible.

All my prior work was done really well by safelite until the TRDP needed the replacement. Had a guy come to my house while I was at work and do the replacement there. WORST. DECISION. EVER.

He left epoxy everywhere. On the fender, roof, oh-shit handles, center console, garage floor. Everywhere. Scratched the paint down to the metal on both a pillars. Had globs of epoxy around the seams inside and outside. The glass was a whole centimeter lower than it should have been and you couldn’t read the VIN through the VIN window.

Took it back to the shop after filing another claim over the phone. Manager did the repair himself and showed me the true damage. The dickwad who did the first job dented and scratched all around the inner frame when he removed the old glass. That’s why he went overboard with epoxy and put the new glass on not lined up properly. He was hiding the damage to the frame of my car that he created. Truck was out at a body shop during snowmageddon for over 3 weeks and there were no 4wd rentals to allow me to get home (we live on a decently steep hillside).

They paid for the repairs and rental. All told Safelite paid almost $4,000 because of an errant, irresponsible asshat tech.

He also broke my drive cam by ripping it off the old glass and took the inner cup holder (guessing he trashed it with epoxy).

So, if you ever decide to use Safelite, only have the work done at their shop where you can inspect and watch. Never allow them to work on your vehicle where you can’t immediately inspect their work.

On my 4th one on my other car in 6+ years. Never gonna happen but sure would like a "road tax" on dumptrucks and other similar vehicles to pay for the damage they do. Also I really hate seeing any truck with the sign that says not responsible for busting your windshield.

Nasty crack on the windshield by the wipers. Is it worth replacing? If so, is OEM worth it?

I wouldn't use OEM because it's likely to happen again. I've replaced my windshield 3 times in 6.5 years of ownership. Our windshields are very vertical and are magnets for road stone damage.
 
You guys think the 4Runner windshields are bad I also have a 09 FJ Cruiser that I have had since new and it's been through 4 windshields already.

Noted. Thanks guys, I will now forever live in fear of replacing my windshield a million times. Had a small crack in mine around 1500 miles, fixed with a DIY 3M kit, it looks better but not perfect. I may go over it again when I get some time. I've had my '92 pickup for almost ten years and have yet to replace a windshield, or even had a crack for that matter, guess they are magnets. :moping:
 
Do what you can to repair/stop the cracking. Thats an oem windshield and heck, you might pick up another rock next week, who knows. Im OCD and have to look at a star every time I get in the driver seat and drives me crazy. I got it filled immediately after the rock hit and that was 3 years ago.
 
Well, there probably goes my plans for a full ceramic tint job. The windshield is the most important window and largest one to tint. I’m guessing just the windshield would be $100-150 to do. With the frequency of cracks that members are stating that could get expensive and be a hassle.

I don’t know where you are but most states don’t allow tint on the windshield below the area of the rear view mirror. Any reputable tint shop wouldn’t tint a windshield beyond that point.

Other than the visor area, I’m genuinely curious why.

I live in SoCal. The ceramic tint most use out here on the windshield is 70-80% and you can’t tell. It does make a big difference, however, when all the windows and windshield are done against heat and UV. I have never heard of anyone getting pulled over with that high of percentage.
 
Just an update, Progressive replaced the windshield with an OEM Toyota stamped one, installed by Safelite at zero cost and hastle. I was ready to put on a fight when I called progressive/safelite to request OEM glass and they said "okay, no problem. will submit that request" :bravo:

Work by Safelite was decent, there was some scuff marks that came off with a paint polisher/sealant. The trim was a little popped up on one side but I was able to push that down into it's place. Haven't washed the car so not sure about leaks.. I plan on washing the car tomorrow

Happened to me with 72 miles on my odometer. Rock hit kicked up by a truck on a grooved pavement. After a couple of weeks the chip turned into a giant two foot long crack. Had it replaced with factory glass. Now I am at 7,000 and have another chip. The 4Runner is a rock and bug magnet. :sad:
 
Already have tons of rock chips and a singular spot scratch on my windshield.

Only 5,000 miles, and I still love the car, damage and all :-)

Came here to tell OP to remove his A-pillar trim for this reason. On my old GTI, Safelite epoxied my rear interior panel to the glass. Forgetting about this, I had them come to my house to replace the windshield on my S4. Had to pull the a-pillar trim only to find globs of epoxy as well.

Fully agreed on watching them at the shop.
