Lets group E-mail Toyota demanding V8

I have only owned V8's, this is my 1st V6, and I am actually HAPPY with it! Shocker, I know!

I agree. Up until two months ago, I owned a GX470 which was pretty much identical to the 4th Gen V8 4Runner. I test drove the 5th Gen two days ago and I found it not really that much worse compared to my old V8 - except perhaps in initial acceleration from standstill if I put my foot down. Since I do not tow and have a relatively relaxed driving style :artist2:, I would be very happy with the new V6 - especially the improved fuel consumption.

The biggest surprise to me though was how well the 5th Gen handled with KDSS. I did not have it in my old vehicle and I was really really impressed !!!

I would like to post a 'dare' to all of the '5th gen no v8 bashers', go find tests of the older 4th gen V6 & V8 (1/4m & 0-60) and compare those to the new V6's results. I know this SUV has a faster times than my last 5.9L V8!

The 4th gen V8 is faster than the 5th gen V6. You can argue that the 5th gen V6 is fast enough, but don't try to say the 5th gen is faster than the 4th gen V8. It isn't.

The GX470 is several hundred pounds heavier than the 4th gen V8.

Maybe,But is that faster in 60ft times, 1/8 mile ,1/4 mile, 0-60mph?
I think it would be alot closer then you think and the new v-6 would win in the 1/4 mile if everything was the same including the weight of the vehicle/tires.

Where the new V6 lacks is the initial torque off the line(admitted that that is what is important for towing) but once that baby spools up it does alright, especially if you use the gated shifter that's in the new 5th. Shift at the yellow line:driving:

The V8 I wanted to have a choice of is the new 4.6L V8 310hp they came out with last year ,not the 4th Gen 4.7L. The new 4.6L V8 is a really sweet motor and it's within 2 mpg avg. of the new 5th Gen V6 but they are saving it for the Lexus GX460.:cry2:

Everything isnt the same.....thats a silly argument.

How else would you race them to see which engine is faster? We are talking the new 4.0L v6 against the 4.7L v8 at the same weight. 4800 lbs vs 4800lbs

I still hav'nt figured where all the extra weight is in the 5th's to make them so heavy. Doors are alot lighter,no tubed running boards, engine is lighter, lighter boxed aluminum bumpers,lighter/cheaper carpeting, ect. Where is the weight gain??I'm starting to think the extra weight is in the beefed up frame. These 5th's are SOLID!

Talk on other 4runner forum/s is that they went to a more beefed up prado 150 frame used in the 200 series landcruisers instead of the prado 120 frame used in the 4th's .

Not to be rude but.... PROVE it! Do you have any numbers to back this up? I am not saying you are NOT right, but I am not saying you ARE right either, simple numbers solve questions. How far are they apart? People can go on forever going back and forth, lets get some numbers together so the only thing people can complain about is towing!

5th gen is 7.8 according to truck trend. Pre VVT-i V8's were 7.1 IIRC which means 05+ V8's are quicker.

PROVEN

There more to complain about as well

-interior fit and finish being a HUGE one.

7.1 is about right for VVTI. Pre-VVTI V8s were about 7.8.

Hmmm.... having a HARD time finding these specs for an 06'-09' V8, anyone have better luck?

Ok, so 0.7 sec difference (+/-) depending on who was doing the testing, where, and how on time.

So the new V6 is a hair slower than the old V8, I will give you that, but if you are not at the drag strip this small differences does not really matter, unless you (insert tool man grunt) need to have it. The only reason for the V8 in the 5th gen is for towing as I can see it. I agree, I would love to be able to tow more than 5k, I took at hit going from 7,300k to 5k, but I can deal with it. I am curious just how many people really town that 7,300lb max and need the torque for it. I have a feeling the tiny % that do is not enough to change Toyota mind.

What about general driving including highway and accelerating. Toyota the designed the V8 with one thing in mind - low end grunt. Its designed to get the 7500lb Land Cruiser moving (after armor) and to have it crawl up rock faces etc etc - now Im not saying that the '10 4runner cant do it - Im saying the V8 produces ~85% of peak torque below 2k RPM. This means when accelerating - the tach rarely goes above 2.2k. I cant tell you how many times Ive accelerated from 50mph to 80mph with ease (while the torque converter remained locked mind you)

On the highway, the torque sweet spot allows you to pass cars without down shifting and again the torque converter remains locked. Furthermore, there is no down shift on inclines etc etc. V8 sounds better doing it to - no unusual noises like the test drive of the '10 gave me.

A full second quicker to 60 is pretty quick IMO - put a load/trailer or armor on the V8 and it will out pull for sure.

I really dont know where your argument comes from...perhaps the frame is beefier but 300lbs more - I dont think so as I imagine the entire frame weighs less than you think. The V8 is a better engine than the 6 for numerous reasons including materials, no known issues (90k timing belt ISNT an issue) and cracked manifolds wont keep you from getting to your destination. There are 3 reported warped blocks of the V6 on this forum alone.

Thats my $.02 for this argument - see you at a red light.

Ok , you would win the drag race....:trophy:and the race to who had to the fill ur up first at the gas pumps by far.I went 490 miles on a tank of gas last week. When I filled up it took 22.1 gallons and was previously full.
I could'nt think straight. That girl in your avatar who keeps pulling up her pants over and over was breaking my concentration.Who is that?:wow:

Towing with the V8 and it low rpm torque is where it really shines. I don't tow anything.

Your interior remark....The interior is subjective to personal taste .More comfortable ,more leg room and height. I personally love it!!ALOT more comfortable then my 4TH to me!

Fair enough - its Shay Laren.

I got 280 miles last tank :( - the new BFG's and winter gas killed my mileage as I was pulling 23mpg in the summer.

Cant complain though - we're both happy and we're both in Toyota 4Runners.

:iagree:

At least you don't have a V6 AND get terrible gas mileage, like me! :cry2:

For some of us, the reduction in towing capacity from 7K to 5K lbs means we cannot tow our current trailers with the 2010 5th gen 4Runner.
Doing so is a SAFETY and LEGAL issue. It is not about towing more than 7300 lbs it is all about having a need to tow more than the 5K lb max rating and that the 2010 4Runner FAILS to MEET that NEED.

Good arguement and remember I'm the OP that started this thread because of the lack of the V8.I drove a buddy's Tundra with the 4.6L V8 last year to pick up some furniture and was really impressed, thought for sure they would offer it in the 5th's.:violin:He said he averages 18-19mpg which I could live with.

I have E-rated BFG's in 275/70/17's and aired them up to 45psi(max 80psi)for the trip and got alot better gas mileage on the highway. Normally been running them at 38 psi.Rougher and sings that sweet BFG road hum more at 45psi but it ain't no cadillac anyways!!

I loved all 3 of my 4Runners!:wink2:
Girlfriend still has a 1998 Limited that I drive all the time too when she can talk me out of my 5th!

Well Toyota does have a vehicle that meets that need, the Sequoia. Yes it is not the 4Runner, but it is very difficult to manufacture a SINGLE vehicle that fits every need, but they do make sure they have a vehicle in their lineup that does.

Satisfying one persons needs may cause repercussions which result in others not being satisfied. An example is the fact that the center diff is not offered in all grade 4wd 4Runners. Some are unhappy over this fact, but if they had put it in, others would be unhappy over the corresponding increase in price.

It is all about trade offs, it is impossible to make everyone happy with one vehicle. My two cents....
