Lets see if I can stump everyone again

I am putting in a on board air system on my runner with 2 tanks one 2 gallon and a 5 gallon aluminum tank I want to mount them in my spare tire area and this is where my question is ...
Is the support that the spare tire pully lift is on a structural peice or can I cut it out?
As the title suggests I usually don't get responses on my questions so I just figure I ask hard questions? Lol :wow:

I'm about to permanently drop my spare and use that space for other things as well but at this minute cannot picture the frame in question.... however:

If the structure that the winch is attached to spans the width of the vehicle (frame rail to frame rail) AND it is made of some thing greater than 1mm thick, formed steel then it is likely a structural member. If it is made of the usual thin steel for accessory attachment then you can remove it without concern.

Look around under there at the steel that is used to mount all the obviously important stuff. If the winch support does not look like that stuff then its not structural.

I'm fighting the urge to go down to my garage and drop my spare...

It is formed but has holes in it I can grab it and get it to move with my hands I will try and get a picture of it in a bit

Crashman, if you can deform it in any way with your bare hands then it is absolutely NOT structural and you can remove it without a second thought.

Cut it out. It's not structural. If you're still worried about it later just weld in a new crossmember after the tanks are mounted.

Why are you set on a) mounting both of your tanks in the spare area and b)chopping out part of the frame? Just seems to me that it would be easier to figure out a way of mounting the tanks either to the frame rails or elsewhere that didn't require chopping off pieces of the frame, structural or not. Others have mounted an auxiliary gas tank in this location in both an FJ and a GX and neither installation mentioned removing a piece of the frame.

I guess I could mount the 2 gal tank elsewhere but I don't think the 5 gallon would fit anywhere else I was thinking of mounting a hinged plate between the rear bumper mount and a cross member for the tanks to mount on and also for protection

just curious, what are you going to be doing that you need 7 gal of air?

I figure it can help on air up plus air tools
I was going to do 12gal but changed my mind
Also the system came with a 2 gallon is why it's 7

Which compressor did you get?

I am going back and forth on using Q3 bouns on either a IPAD or onboard air. If I go with air, the compressor must be able to support a air locker and 2 gal tank (and train horns of course).

I am real interested to see your set up when you get it running.

I got this one with a aluminum 5 gal extra tank also I got a digital gauge for inside so I don't have to have a extra airline run into the cab
