I borrowed the idea originally from rickashay's RickRunner build.

the Kenu Airframe vent clip is awesome. i tried other brands and regretted it and never really wanted a large suction cup RAM type of phone holder because i feel like it encourages theft/i dont want to take it off and on everytime i get in the car etc... the $25 spent on Kenu was well worth it. its secure and easy to take your phone in and out from. Vent covering never seemed to be an issue for heat or AC - you can orient it to not cover the entire vent and if youre really needy of heat or AC directly hitting you then you can put your phone elsewhere during that time.

There's a small double-side taped metallic plate that you place on the outside (protective cover )of your phone. Therefore, it's the metallic plate that is magnetized to the magnet clip attachment - not the cell phone itself. Been using this for almost a year on all phones (iPhone and Android), no problem.

I got one of those Wiz Mounts for myself too, after seeing this thread. I just adhered the metal plate to the back of the case (so it's visible), didn't even think of putting it on the inside. It doesn't bother me though, it's very thin.

It works great, and feels really secure, and it doesn't wobble when I'm touching the screen and stuff. I also bought one of those Bluetooth AUX adapters, which sits nicely in the console. Downside is that it requires me to turn the adapter on each time I get in the car, but still a little bit better than connecting the AUX cord to my phone. Plus, it allows me to wirelessly have my phone on the mount, except when it needs to charge.

Basically, I bent some flat steel about 2" wide and attached it to the back of the headunit. Places it right above the headunit but not blocking view like it would on the dash. Attached a rotating magnet mount.

EDIT: Here are the pictures. Currently have my brake controller monitor there instead of the phone mount.

I've had it for over a year in 100+ and 20 below temps. No problems.

My previous phone mount was in the 12V socket down on the console. Tired of having to look down there, and inspired by a fabricated metal phone mount posted by [MENTION=119029]NinjaOne[/MENTION] (Thanks!), I made one out of this sheet aluminum from Home Depot. Then I added this magnetic mount from Walmart.

The first step was cutting several test templates from manila folders to get the fit right and figure out where the bends needed to be. I drilled holes and attached it to the side of the HU with the bolts that attach the side trim then ran it up and over to the center of the HU, then out/up/out to form the "shelf" on which the phone mount sits.

The aluminum used is strong enough for the purpose but thin enough to be cut with tin snips and shaped without needing special tools. Some stick on rubber padding isolates it from the metal on the HU casing.

I used strips of this Scotch fastener tape (love that stuff!) on the top of the molding/back of the up part of the metal to strengthen the shelf and ended up also adding a small L-brace underneath the shelf. That eliminated a tiny bit of jiggle that probably wouldn't bother 99% of the world's population but it did me. Used a leftover plastic piece from a shelf or some such.

It's rock-solid now, having been accidentally proven off the pavement today when I impulsively turned into a power line road where the gate was open and there was no signage about keeping out or trespassing. Expected a glorified fire road but holy hell, it was rough and rutted such that I almost got stuck. But the Phone stayed right in place and wasn't bouncing at all! :biggrin1:

It's not perfect since it blocks a bit of the HU screen when in portrait mode, but that's a small tradeoff for the overall convenience of having it at eye level.

That’s a really nice mount, and is exactly the same position mine is in, except I have a CD slot on my Pioneer HU, so I went with a purchased mount for that. Since it’s a single din, I wasn’t too worried about the partial blockage of the display, as all I really miss is song titles and such. Since I had the CD slot (which I don’t use anyway), I bought the Wizgear magnetic mount for the CD slot. There are 2 versions, one with a wingnut manual lock, and another with a quick release mechanism, which is much better because it allows me to move it quickly to other vehicles. I’m sold on the magnetic mounts now! The biggest thing that held me back all these years was that when they first came out, you needed to stick the receiver part to the outside of the phone, or case, which I hated, especially the ball mount ones which were very bulky. This one I bought has the ability to sandwich the plate inside the case so it doesn’t show, which was another reason I chose it. Since I have a Spigen case that has a hard shell, and rubber inner section, I chose to put the plate in between the layers, so the magnetic bond would be stronger than if it had to go through both layers. I initially tested it through both, and it worked fine, but I wanted it as good as I could get it without showing. Since my case has a little kickstand lever that interferes with fitting the plate where I wanted it, I had to trim it a bit to clear that mechanism, but it was well worth the effort because I now have a completely invisible setup, and can either move the mount to other cars, or just buy other mounts (which I’ll probably do for my other vehicles since they are so cheap!)

I've been using the proclip vent mount unit. Pretty convenient other than not allowing use of a phone case. The mount and phone stayed where they belonged in the collision that totaled my '09 SR5.

So now it's mounted in my 'new' 2007...

You can now buy the docking part of the mount from ProClip that lets you adjust the width of it. I use it on my Pixel 2 XL and it'll fit without a case, or if I adjust it it can also fit the Pixel 2 XL with a thick OtterBox on it.

I use this vent mount I found on Amazon. It has a hook at the back to keep it from sliding off the vent. It applies pressure by screwing on. I was able to mount it pretty high so as to not block the vent.

The pressure is being applied mostly to the dash. It feels really solid, but I haven’t taken it off-road.

I went this route. It doesn't block anything.
The suction cup material is also sticky, so it stays attached to the side of the console
