Let's talk PCV valve and breather

20w oil is pretty thick for that 4cyl engine, you might consider something slight thinner. This might be counter intuitive but the heavy weight oil your running might be building up too high of an internal crankcase pressure which is giving you the excessive blow by.
regards

I didn't start with that weight. I progressively went up to that.

You might consider doing a compression check, possibly getting some loss from the guides. With a 22RE, you should be able to run 10w-40 without significant blow by. How do the plugs look? Are you getting any blue smoke out the back on decel?
regards

I have done a compression check. I'm getting between 165-175 on all 4 cylinders. But I talked to the guys at LCE Performance and they said that with all the oil that is coming up in the cylinders, it's expected for compression to be that high. The plugs look a bit dark but not too bad. They are relatively new plugs too, maybe 5k miles on them. As for the smoke, it's hard for me to tell because I cannot really see it while I'm driving. I have tried to look but I don't really have any good info there. I can say that it smells like there is an exhaust leak but I'm assuming that is just the oil burning up in the exhaust or the header. Also, when warming up the engine, there is a little bit of black junk that spits out of the end of the exhaust pipe. I'm assuming that is oil. At the rate that I'm going through oil, it doesn't surprise me that I'm burning it in the exhaust and spitting it out.

I just added another quart and a half this morning. I topped the oil off on the 7th when I started this thread. So, in 12 days (probably 500 miles) I went through over a quart of oil. I'm not leaking anywhere so I'm burning all of it. It may not all be coming up through the pistons but if the piston rings aren't seating properly then I'll have excess crank case pressure and causing the oil to enter the intake manifold through the PCV breather line.

These will be perfect candidates for a drive train to do my engine swap:

Toyota Tacoma Salvage Trucks for Sale | 2388457

Toyota Tacoma Salvage Trucks for Sale | 2369970

Maybe I can get one of them for under 2k and have almost everything I need for the swap. It will be a few months before I do it though. But they are good examples of how I'll approach my swap.

Dude, how awesome would it be if it stayed at like 400 bucks and you got it to your house for under a grand??

The 96 isn't bad, I'd drive it as is

Those are potentially some sweet deals there! If you don't mind me saying, I think you should try and stay with the earlier models, too, before the 3rz went to distributorless ignition. Have you seen the harnesses from ORI? They make a conversion harness for the 22RE to the 3RZ. They aren't cheap, but that's a giant headache out of your way when it comes time for the swap. I'm thinking I'll be getting one for sure.

I do really like the idea of a turbo charged 3rz. But after taking a peek on LCE's website, I'll need the turbo kit and another fuel management system to handle the extra fuel. Both of those together are about $4,000. Plus the engine and swap stuff will be another $2,000-$3,000. I'll spend between $6,000 and $7,000 for a turbo 3rz. It will have about 300hp+ and will be a sweet engine but I'm not willing to spend that much on an engine.

If I go with the 5vz motor, I can do the swap for between $2,000 and $3,000. Then I have seen a handful of used superchargers with the 7th injector kit and the urd pulley for about $1,500. So I can easily have 300-350hp and close to the same numbers in tq with a SC 5vz for about $4,500.

Here soon my 4runner will be parked in the garage for a few months while I'm on the east coast for school. When I get back I'll find a 5vz truck with a manual tranny and start the swap. I'll keep my costs down by stealing FoG's transmission late at night. :D

You know that thing will sieze up if you let it sit all winter. You should just park it over here and I will see if I cam kill that 22re for good. If nothing else I can drive it while I rip apart the Minnow.

It's still a good motor but I just don't want to save it right now. I'll package the motor and store it in the garage after the engine swap. Maybe I'll eventually build a trail only rig that can get torn up and wrecked on Independence or carnage.

BUT... if you want to step up in the 4runner world and drive my runner a little here and there while I'm in school, you're more than welcome to. Don't forget to add oil :D

Just be careful and don't get too attached. Eventually you'll have to say good bye to it and drive yours again. You're going to fall in love with it, wash it, give it attention, and get all kinds of emotional. It's expected, just be ready for it. :driving:
