Let's Talk Tires...

Currently my Dad is running stock sized Mastercraft Courser A/T's, and HATES them. He's been through 2 winters with them and in the snow it's like skating on ice. They're rated at 40k mile tires and he has about 55k on them, that's the only good thing about these things.

I'm wondering what you guys would prefer for a new set.

He wants something with a cool looking tread, decent tread life, the optional raised white lettering, and obviously something that won't hurt the wallet.

New England guys I NEED YOUR HELP! haha.

I dont think you can get the nittos with the white lettering though..

Thanks alot. I haven't heard a lot about the BFG's but i do notice how popular they are around here. So they must be a decent tire if so many people have them.

Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armors might also be a good option, they are supposed to be pretty good in the snow.

I run the Nitto Terra Grapler's on two 4runners. Have had no problems with them. I don't think they have raised white letters.

Yeah, the raised white lettering is a big thing with him, ever since he purchased these Mastercrafts he fell in love with the raised white letter look. Thanks though.

We will check the Coopers out also. I am pretty sure those will have raised white lettering because a friend of mine has a Cooper tire with the raised white lettering out. Thanks.

I've had them on since October and love them! I usually switch over to my studded tires, which are mastercraft courser msr's, but not with the lack of snow this year. I was very impressed with the snow and wet road traction of these tires. Ive had BF AT's and TG's in the past and found that they ware quickly for a DD but are amazing in dirt. Destinations should last 60k+ and they were only $775 shipped to my door for 285/7017's!!! Hard to beat those numbers.

My vote is for Firestone Destination A/Ts. They are a great all around tire for sure. Quiet on road and work really well off road. They are beefy enough to not get you in trouble. Ive not had the chance to run mine in the snow but others on this forum swear they are top notch snow shoes.

Dont do any off roading so I run general grabber hts highway all season. Very comfortable ride and handles well in many different conditions.
Wife runners goodyear tripletreads on her rav4. Very nice tire but much more expensive.

I also have the General Grabber HTS. Been driving on them for the last 25,000miles or so. Very quiet and smooth on the highway. Good wet traction and I would say about average in the snow. I am thinking of buying a set of used rims perhaps the FJ steel wheels and getting dedicated snow tires for next winter though.

I think that either the Destinations or Silent Armors are a good choice for tires used for all year weather including snow and Ice and medium trail runs.

Good luck wiht decisions- what ever you decide remember it does not hurt to ask for a better price and there are other stores that sell the same product.

Ditto on the Firestone Destination A/T's. I had them on my 3rd gen and they were great. I just bought Goodyear Duratracs for my 4th gen (love them) but they're more aggressive, not sure if that's what your after. The Firestones are cheaper as well. Good luck in your search, there's to many choices out there.

I had crap tires on my t4r when I got it and changed in Nov to Michelin ltx a/t2 and they are fantastic for an all around tire. They are great on wet pavement and very good in snow. I have driven over the passes several times to our cabin and on the back roads in snow.

Dad is hoping to get through his upcoming April inspection with his almost worn out Mastercrafts (just above the "tread wear marker" all around).

This summer he will be getting some new rubber.

After all the input everyone has given about the Firestone Destination A/T's that seems like it will be the choice that he will make.

Others have mentioned the Goodyear's...And it all depends on the type of deal that his buddy can get him at our nearby "Town Fair Tire".

I will make sure to update this thread with some nice pictures after the new set of tires are purchased and installed.

I had crap tires on my t4r when I got it and changed in Nov to Michelin ltx a/t2 and they are fantastic for an all around tire. They are great on wet pavement and very good in snow. I have driven over the passes several times to our cabin and on the back roads in snow.

I also have the Michelin LTX AT2's. I LOVE them!! On many reviews I read online before buying, everyone loved these tires, and many got nearly 100K miles out of them. That's not surprising as I got 85K miles on my OEM Michelin Cross Terrains on my 2007 Runner.

Also, consider this: Michelin makes the tires for ALL Airbus jets A319, A320, A330 (one of my fav jets btw) A340 and A380 as the OEM tire AND they also make the tires that are OEM on many Boeing jets fresh out of the factory......B757, B767, B777.

Yes, you will pay top dollar for Michelins, BUT........you will get what you pay for too:beer:

I had the BFG's on my Jeep Wrangler back in the day, and they were OK, but wore down fast (50K) and were good in snow, but not good in rain at all.
OK, I am now stepping down off my soapbox now.....LOL
