Lexus GX470 V8 Only Premium Fuel?

I saw that on the Lexus website yesterday when researching the vehicle. I just wondering if there is any merit behind it, or if truly it is "premium" because it is a luxury vehicle. Kinda hard to believe, but I've heard that theory before. I read some boards on the Lexus website about the GX470 and they say the same...that they don't "think" they need premium, even though they are told to use it.

i read an article on this forum that interviewed a car designer from toyota (or maybe honda?). he said that most luxury brands say to use premium to make them feel special about having an expensive car. while some luxury cars require it, such as infinitys, the lexus does not. i know first hand that rx300, is300, es300, ls400, and gx470 can all run on regular, while the owner's manual recommends premium for better performance, just like our manual says.

The reason it runs a little slower is it weighs a couple hundred pounds more,

Perfect SUV = 4Runner exterior + Lexus interior I think that sums it up pretty well!
Havent read the manual, But the Lexus aint gettin any different
fuel than the 4 Runner. I figure the slower acceleration feel
was due to full time 4WD, its noiser. Driving of the two
prefer the Lexus, its smoother, and once under way quieter,
extra features make it more pleasureable to drive. Neither
will see off roading, but only a faction of SUV do. When
do will just keep the Avalanche for that. They were brought
for just typical day to day hauling you cant do in a
Corvette or the new Thunderbird.

I concur. When shopping last year I looked very hard at the GX. I love the interior (for the most part). The leather seats are great and I like the extra headroom - not to mention some of the amentities. Not crazy about the 4Runner's HVAC controls, but I do like the center console better than that of the GX.
As far as exterior, I found the GX boring while the 4Runner is more aggressive and muscular. Also, could not have lived with the "Japanese" side opening rear hatch with fixed window. One of my 4Runner pleasures is driving with all the windows down and sunroof open. I also use the rear window opening to carry long objects. The side opening hatch seems like it would get i nthe way of a trailer tongue as well
As far as ride and handling, while the GX is "softer" and slightly quieter, the Runner is faster (less weight) with tighter handling. It is more fun to toss around. (FWIW, I am comparing the X-REAS equipped Runner to the non-KDSS GX.) For some reason our local dealer can't or won''t get in GX models with the KDSS sport package.
As an aside, I visit the Lexus forums on occasion and am amazed at their viewpoints re. the GX and 4Runner. Most don't even tow, go off-road or even get their vehicles dirty for that matter. Strictly suburban warriors. Many either don't know or won't admit the common lineage of the two vehicles. LOL . A different market segment I suppose!

Thank you all for the educated and informative feedback on this issue. I agree too with the Love the exterior of our 4Runner, want the interior of the Lexus quote. I'm going to drive a GX this weekend, but already love my 4Runner too much to pay the big $$ difference for the nicer interior. I'm reading that on average the GXs run about $48-50K out the door. That is nearly $15K more than my 4Runner for just a nicer interior and more vanlike, less aggressive exterior. Hopefully Toyota will incorporate some of their upgrades in our future models. 
For that price, I'd better be using premium fuel...
If I spent $15k more just to have a badge say Lexus, I better get something to make me feel so special....hey, I better pump premium fuel in it....that Lexus must have a special engine not found on those pedestrian and oh so plebian 4Runners....must be some special intake to NEEDS 91 octane....just as well, the higher price weeds out the hoi polloi from using that special 91 octane pump handle anyway. I better wash the car only with those alpaca woolen wash mittens blesssed by Tibetan monks, too. Better connect the wash sprayers to the 80 galloon tank of double distilled and purified Perrier water just to wash the LEXUS. Would not want to ruin the finish with just hose water...
GIMME A F*CKIN' BREAK!
For $15k more, the salesgirl in the Lexus showroom would be getting down on her knees to check my drive shaft with her tongue.!

All I ever see in Toyota are 20 something college boys with hangovers trying to make beer money by selling trucks they don't know a thing about. I always have to deal with the "manager", but often he isn't much better. I've left many a dealership frustrated by their trained monkeys. I know some of you have good dealerships, and I'm truly happy for you, you are the minority.

Actually, many people in Scottsdale drive all the upscale vehicles. Lots of Lexus, Infinity, Porche, Hummer, Acura, Caddies, etc. I would say that about the biggest plebian brand, however, is Toyota. One thing about Scottsdale folks, as opposed to somewhere like Malibu or Beverly Hills, is that most of these folks are self-made, and came up the hard way. So while they may drive the nicer cars, they still likely don't have their cars hand washed with a minature poodle. (Although I do see a few Ferraris & Bentleys - they probably do the poodle wash.)

I write so much it hurts. My official writing is checked nad doubled checked and spell checked again. SO when I post here or on other sites I jes don't bother. You know what I mean...
It's like wifezilla trying to get me to wear somehting "nice" to go out to dinner in...I tell her taht I wear a full suit, dress shirts all starched and pressed, braces, tassled loafers, etc, 10 hours a day, 5 days a week. When I get home it's shorts, sleeveless muscle shirts, and flip flops.:awais:
