Lift gate "storage"

Anybody seen/built/have anything like this for the lift gate? I think if it was secured enough which these look like they are then even when it's in the air it would be pretty solid (granted you would need to double check your zippers are done and you don't have anything heavy that would swing down like an ax or hammer...might hurt).

I like having the space to put things in the back but I'm OCD and everything needs a place, the more I can organize and have stuff somewhere, the happier I am. I already built Antman's rear storage and divided it up in to more compartments just cause I need the division.

I think it's a great concept...Molle packs and all.....but I'm not sure how would access it unless you disconnect it to get into it.

Looks nice - I've seen a lot of Jeepers do that as well.

One thing to keep in mind though is adding weight to a swing gate is not the same as a lift gate. You may need stronger shocks to support the added weight.

That's one thing Gobi sorted pretty well. I'm fairly certain I could sit my GF on my tailgate and the Gobi beefy struts would still push it open...

WOW!!! I am stupid...must be the weekend laziness and too much web surfing. Didn't think about the whole above the head thing.

Although if it had a quick release system so you could still store things like the hi-lift or other solid objects. Almost like a motorcycle saddle bag release bracket for each bag...

And they sell the same "rack" mounting hardware for inside on the sides. I just though they looked a lot more solid and versatile than drilling in for individual brackets. That way if you ever change the setup and want to hand something else besides an air tank or fire extinguisher it would be easier then having a drilled out rear storage area.

Maybe you could add some kind of custom hinge to let the rack fold and hang down, facing you. And a latch to keep it in place when you dont.

i thing if you made a long rectangular piece of cordura with kydex inserts it would work. sew in a molle panel and you're set.

What about hooks to the top and bottom? When you open the gate, unhook the bottom and everything hangs down in front of you? Most things would probably need to be stored on the inside but i'm sure a few things can hang on the other side too.

Just be careful with adding too much weight to the lift gate, as the gas struts will not take kindly to it. As the struts get older they may not support much extra weight on the lift gate.

A swing out door like the FJ, does not have this issue.
