Lift on Order! Now what wheels?

I spent my Friday night viewing all 80+ pages of 'lifted pix' on this forum. I saved 90+ photos for my future reference/inspiration as to what I want my 4R to look like.

I ordered the Low Range 3" lift last week. It's a spacer lift. :driving:

I purchased new Cooper AT3's 265/70-17's about ~6 months ago, which I most likely will sell after I get new 285's. (to put $ toward my new tires)

I plan on getting the Duratrac 285/70-17's after I get my lift installed.

(Side Note: I really like the 20" wheel/tire combo's I've seen, but my budget is making me stick with the 17".)

My dilemma now lies with the wheels!?

My options:
1. Keep my stock SR5 wheels, and install the 285's on them. Based on what I've seen, i'll need to order the $200 spidertrax 1.25" wheel spacers, so there is not a ton of rubbing.

It would look similar to this photo then:

2. Order new wheels after lift install. I'm favoring the Ultra Baron wheels($600 total), 17x9, -12mm offset. This offset seems to be what everyone uses, such as Hellamatic. Sell the stock SR5 wheels, to recoup some $ for these.

Here's a quick photoshop of what look I'm shooting for: (stolen photos, not actually mine)

Do you think either option above will prevent/minimize any rubbing issues?
Do I just tell the alignment tech to set the caster to +3 or +4, if possible to prevent rubbing? I do NOT plan on getting UCA's.

Thanks in advance for the feedback, and this forum rocks. I'm just trying to justify in my head(and wallet) that everything will FIT and won't rub(or fully lock-up) every time I turn the steering wheel!

As I understand it, adding Spidertraxs increases the rubbing when turning the wheel to full lock with the 285's
Ask yourself, do you do a lot of serious off road? If you do, get the Duratracks, I do a lot of off road, forest service road and sand and I don't even consider them.
I admit, I don't spend a ton of money on flashy stuff. My rig gets me were I want to go.

You shouldn't have any rubbing issues with stock wheels and no spacers. I had very minimal issues with rubbing when I had stock rims. Once you add spacers or aftermarket wheels with the -12 offset, rubbing will increase significantly. I chopped my body mount to fix this, although I still rub a little bit on the mudflaps.

My take on your dilemma: if you're building your truck to go out in the boonies, get some duratracs, keep the stock wheels for now, and use the cash on more functional upgrades, like auxiliary lighting or body armor. You can always upgrade a (mostly) cosmetic item like wheels sometime down the road.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Stock SR5 wheels, with 285's = shouldn't rub. Spacers make for a 'better' stance, but most likely will rub.

Let's say my truck will be on pavement 90%+ of the time. (except some camping, winter ice fishing, occasional dirt/gravel roads, at least for now)

I'm not building it to go out in the boonies, but more for the cosmetic appeal. But, it'll still be able to go out into the boonies, if needed.

If I buy the Baron(-12mm) wheels, and 285 Duratracs, do you think I can get by not rubbing by doing the 'fender liner mod' or with just a heat gun? I don't want to do a body-chop, and if thats the case I'd likely just downsize the tire instead.

If you're going 285, you will likely want to seriously start considering a body mount chop. Fender liner mod will only get you so far. Also make sure you keep your spare in the same tire size.

Okki

Would LR UCA's help?

If I installed the LR UCA's, would that give me enough room to adjust the caster forward, to prevent the 285's from rubbing the body mount?

I didn't plan on dropping $450 on LR UCA's, but if that will work, I might have to think about it.

I've seen a few SR5's on here with a very similar setup. ~3" lift, with UCA's, and 285's.

OP UCAs will help with castor and probably prevent the body chop BUT not 2 rigs are the same

[opinion]sorry but I just gotta say..... this is a prime example of do it right do it once. It never ceases to amaze me that someone will slap a $200 space lift on a rig keeping OEM shocks and then they end up having to throw $500 at it for UCAs to make it work and inevitably they end up having to replace the shocks (Especially the rear ones) because they are the incorrect length[/opinion]

This. Word for word. Skip the wheels for now and put the $$ into a good quality lift that does it right, with UCAs. Do it right and do it once.

and OP I am not trying to be a d1ck toward you I just see it all the time on every platform of vehicle that I get in to ..... My first Jeep had 5 lifts on it before I finally got it right... never again!

yes, I know that I should go with the "good stuff" right away, but my budget isn't allowing that right now.(baby due in 4weeks) It seems like the spacer will work for all my needs, as I like the current ride feel, and off-roading will be minimal.

I think since my lift is already on the way, I'll end up installing it this weekend, and leave my stock wheels, and my (near brand new)265 Cooper AT3's on for awhile. My labor is free at that point. At least until I can get some reassurance, or physical measurements, that a larger tire will fit with minimal issues. Or I might look into how difficult the body mount chop is too. Or I'll keep my eyes open for some spidertrax spacers perhaps too.

I just have a feeling that If I don't pull the trigger on wheels/tires now......that it won't happen after the baby shows up next month.
