I have a 2006 sport with 109,000 miles on the XREAS. I want to replace it all completely and have a 2.5/2 or 3/2 lift with 275/70R17 tires. I do a lot of commuting and only the occasional off-roading. I was looking at the toytec ultimate lift but I was wondering if there are cheaper options out there that will net me the same results. Since I don't off road all that much I don't think I need a 1300 lift. Also I'm pretty mechanical but haven't worked with suspension. So also opinions on kits I can install myself.

First off, don't go with the Ultimate. For a couple more dollars you might as well go with the Toytec BOSS kit with their own shocks and valving designed for our 4Runners.

If you want the cheap option you could just hunt down some FJ coils and pair them with Bilstein 5100s for the height you need to clear the tires you want to run. The Bilsteins are height adjustable and the FJ coils themselves will give you a little bit of lift. All in all I think it would cost you in the neighborhood of $500. You may have a little trimming to do, but you should definitely be able to clear.

I'm a huge Daystar 2.5/1.5 leveling/lift kit fan. It allows for 32 inch tire with some easy fender well adjustments (if you also have spacers.) Daystar retains factory ride quality. With a little patience and $135 you can do this one yourself. It is xraes compatible I'm almost certain. It's a system of polymer spacers that sit on top of front struts so it's quiet, soft, and durable. Maybe my favorite thing I've modified on my runner.

I put Bilstein 5100's on mine for $330 from Down South Motorsports, a rear Daystar 1.5" block for $35 from 4Wheel parts. Put the Bilsteins on the 2.5" setting on fronts and it sat level with the rear blocks. I have 33's on there and had to move the front liner forward just a little bit. You will however need aftermarket wheels or spacers to move the tires out just a little bit so they don't hit your stock UCA's. For less than $400 you can have all the lift you need, fit tires you want, and the shocks ride great!

I want to spend under 700. I want it done right but I don't need top of the line. I already have wheel spacers. t-man did you upgrade from your stock coils or just add the spacer? I was looking to get rid of XREAS completely so the spacer lift on my current system isn't what im looking for. Will I need spacers to get the rear fj springs to a 2" lift?

I have stock coils for now with the spacer on the rear. When I can i want the long travel kit on the back. It's $1000 though.. Lol I actually want the total chaos long travel +3.5 in the front too.. Everything together is just over 8k. Won't be anytime soon!

Yes... the rear FJ coils will only net about 1/2" to 3/4" of lift so with the 1.5" Daystar spacers, you'll be where you want to be.

Okay perfect. Will I need spacers on the front? I know the 5100 are adjustable but it wont make the coil longer right? I'm not certain how the adjustable 5100 work but that would make sense to me that I need a spacer up front too.

With the height-adjustable front 5100's, there's no need for spacers. I think that the 5100's have four spring perch settings on them... can't think of them off the top of my head (something like 0", 0.85", 1.25", and 2.00"), but I'd just use one of the settings and not worry about spacers. I'm sure that someone that's used that set-up will chime in.
