Lifted 5th gen with boards or steps?

Thinking of lifting my 5th gen with bigger tires on stock rims. I want to lose the running boards - at 6'4", I don't need them. But at 5'0", my wife needs them now and would really need them after lifting. Anyone lift theirs and keep the running boards and have pix? Or any pix of other step options installed on a lifted T4R?

I'm doing the shrockworks sliders with step. They are in order now. Maybe [MENTION=66624]KCcarguy[/MENTION] or [MENTION=62008]limamike[/MENTION] can show you a picture.

Do you like how they look on there now? Personally I hate the OEM running boards because they are so chunky looking (for lack of a better description); but if you like them now, I don't see why it would be any different after lifting it? And likewise, if you hate how they look now, it's probably not going to look any better after you lift it :)

No I do not but I disagree that if I don't like them now, I may not like when lifted. Part of what I don't like is just how it gives a lower look to an already low vehicle. May look fine when lifted and leveled. I was hoping someone had a quick picture since the lifted pic thread is over 100 pages.
 
LOL it took a couple days of on-and-off, I have looked through all 100 pages and got some real good ideas. Not all of them have pics on them. It is your best bet, I certainly couldn't pick a single picture out of the thread unless I remembered a keyword from the post.

Yep. That's mine. I love my step sliders. But they are definitely a compromise. They sit up high just below the rocker. So, if you don't really need something that can function as a slider N-fabs would be much more functional as a step.

IMO -- Nfabs look better than running boards, but I may be biased.

Does Nfab offer something in stainless or chrome? I have only seen them in black. Normally black is what I would want but too much stock chrome on the runners and not going to black it out. And how difficult is the install on the 4runner? I was going to put a set on my Ram until I saw that the install required drilling.
 
Which trim level do you have, the Nfabs I believe are designed for the Trail. So for a SR5 trim, you would have to cut the stock rocker trim, or get adapters.

Okay, no thanks to you guys :bounce:, I found the time to flip through about half of the pages in the lifted pic sticky. I found two that were close to what I was looking for. Unfortunately, both members have less than 10 posts each and neither has posted here in almost 2 years. So, pm'ing them would probably be fruitless.

Anyway, the silver one doesn't look that great but i think that's because of the tires - not the look I really want at all. The dark one doesn't look bad at all and has tires more like what I would get. But it would be nice to see more angles, especially a profile shot.

I think what I will plan to do is do the lift and tires and leave the boards on. I may even try plasti-dipping the chrome trim on the boards so that they don't stand out as much. If I'm just not happy with the look, I may swap them out for something like the nFabs with spacers.



 
Here is my thoughts: if you’re putting a lift on it is for a couple different reasons 1) you want bigger tires 2) you want higher ground clearance 3) you’re doing it for looks 4) all the above.

Leaving a piece of plastic hanging down another 6 inches under the already super low SR5 side skirts defeats all of this, it makes it appear to look lower in addition leaving low hanging area to be destroyed. (Case in point - post below)

If you don’t off-road your vehicle or care about ground clearance why do the lift in the first place? For looks…that will be defeating the taller height by leaving all that extra plastic down there.

Maybe I just don’t get it…

Here ya go. Lifted with stock running boards. Have Shrockworks on there now with their TE trim. Wife actually like the Shrockworks sliders more than the oem running boards.
