Lifted and police attention?

I think it depends on where you live, I'm in the greater NYC area and the only time I get pulled over is on the bike(BMW 1200GS). Bikers in NY are singled out and the state is in a full jihad against anything that has an engine and two wheels. This has been going on for years now, thankfully the AMA is trying to fix this but......

I've been pulled over more often in my '93 Ranger, 5 speed 4 cylinder, 2wd non-modified, than my lifted '14 4Runner and lifted '07 Tundra. Go figure.

As a police officer I can tell you that modified vehicles do stick out more than a stock vehicle. Reason being? When people modify their Vehicle they tend to do things that are illegal such as ridiculously loud mufflers or tires sticking 12 inches out from the fenders. With that being said, becasue these vehicles stand out doesn't mean that I target them. I like to target reckless drivers and drivers that use their cell phones and don't use their seat belts. By pulling these people over I may be able to save a life.

I had to do a ride-a-long for a program I was in and I asked the cop all sorts of questions about this kind of thing. The surprising answer was he didn't give a shit about traffic violations unless someone was doing something blatantly stupid and dangerous. Around here there are "traffic enforcement" (all the motorcycles and a few pikcups), then all the other officers. Only the traffic enforcement vehicles have regularly calibrated speedos and radar systems. The non-traffic enforcement officers were talking about how there have been times where they've pulled over people for blatant offenses, but the offender shows up in court and gets off. Their violation could not be proven beyond a reasonable doubt because it's their word vs. the officer. I've also been told by a highway patrolman that he doesn't pull people over unless they're going 80+ in a 65 because he likes to target the "high-roller" in his words. I've driven modified vehicles my whole life and I've only been pulled over once in 12 years (speeding on the Bay Bridge). I usually just go 5 over and always wear my seat belt, use turn signals, come to a complete stop and make sure I don't have any burnt out lights.

Edit: Forgot to add that the only reason I was reminded of this is because the part of your post I quoted. The officer I was with said he is more concerned about spending his time on the other calls that are the main purpose of his job (domestic abuse, drug dealers etc.) than pulling people over for traffic violations.

Disclaimer: I have nothing against ricers, lowered vehicles or bikes b/c at one point in time ive owned them myself. I still own a bike though b/c its the most economical thing to commute with..

I don't get pulled over in my 4Runner. Ever. I drive like an adult and keep my 4Runner clean. If I make eye contact with an oncoming police officer I'll give a friendly wave, and go about my business.

What I COULD be cited for...
My headlights are modified (retrofitted and aimed correctly), I don't have mud flaps, my tires are a couple inches outside of my fender flares, I don't I have a front license plate, and my front windows are tinted quite a bit darker than what is legal.

Again, I don't recall EVER being pulled over in my 4Runner.

I also have a 2WD 1986 Toyota Pickup with some body damage on the bed, peeling paint, and it's just an overall eye sore. Since I bought that truck nearly 2 years ago I've been pulled over probably a half dozen times. Never a ticket.

Why?

Twice I was pulled over by a police officer behind me at a stop light. Both times they said "my registration came back as expired" when they ran my plates.

Once for "speeding" I saw the officer following me and was going 35 in a 35 according to my speedometer. He told me I was going "closer to 40".

Another for "speeding" but I was actually "speeding". 38 in that same 35.

Twice for "swerving over the white line" again- I saw the officer behind me and am POSITIVE I never crossed the line. Both times asked if I had been drinking, I said no, and that was the end of it.

I eventually got tired of this game and more or less stopped driving my pickup after dark, and got some high speed veteran's plates. Haven't been stopped since.

I've seen several pickup trucks around town that need a ladder to get in. Really.

A good wind would push them over.

When I was an MP I looked for cell phone use, running stop signs and seatbelts. At that, I usually gave verbal warnings unless you were doing something endangering the life of someone. I didnt care what you drove.

Maybe a thumbs up if anything. I have a few friends who are police officers who also wheel and drive lifted Toyotas.
