Like Your 4th Gen. Don't Like 5th Gen?

You know I had the same thought process. Do I appreciate the new tech, and the extra cabin room for my lanky size yes. But I do know how much I appreciate the blind spot mirrors and auto closing hatch. Makes you wonder why Toyota dropped these when building the new model. So eventually I will get into a 5th, but I will hold on to my 4th for a very very long time. Currently at 118k.

Yeah i dont care for the bulky look of the 5th gens either. Its just too much body, i like the skinnier sleek fit look of my 4th gen.(how i like my women too lol) but anywho mine just turned 148,300

I had a 5th Gen. I liked it, for the most part, and only got rid of it because it felt like the fiscally responsible thing to do with a kid on the way.
Still, there were things I didn't like. First and foremost, the lack of LSD on the 4wd system on anything but the limited. I had a Trail Premium so I could get the rear diff. MN winters call for a fair amount of 4wd driving -- most of which is on the highway for me to and from the office. On those roadways there's a ton of variation between slippery and dry pavement, and lacking the LSD bothered me. I always felt like I should be flipping back and forth between PT4wd and 2wd. It sucked not having that flexibility -- especially since the truck cost almost $40K.
There were other little irritating things, but nothing to get too bent out of shape over. I like my 4th (this is my second 4th gen) because it does everything it's supposed to do quite well -- and costs a boatload less. Mine has 87K on it, and it runs like a champ. I had to do some smaller things to make it the way I like it (lift with 5100s, spidertrax, MegaWarrior, new stereo system (the 5th gen is SO much better with the EnTune system), new wheels, new tires, and some light stuff, but at the price tag of 5th vs 4th it's worth it. Also, most of the things above would have needed to be done on my 5th too once the warranty expired (except the stereo). In fact, I had to shell out for new tires in the first 500 miles because the 5th gen Duelers were such dogsh*t.
5ths are nice, but the LSD was a deal-breaker for me. So much so that I wouldn't own another if things changed.

Those little mirrors make freeway driving so much safer. I have wondered how I could put those on a new vehicle and basically gave up trying. People chide me on the burger tray but when you are driving on your own it is very helpful. Great for keeping a camera handy also.

This. Just don't like the 5th gen styling. I bought my '07 Sport last year with 96K miles; just turned over to 113K and plan to drive it until the wheels fall off.
I don't even like that chunky 4Runner badge they use now. Wish they'd kept the one where the 4 is joined to the R.

The rear mirrors are great for checking for cross traffic while backing out. They can see way farther left and right than any backup camera. And during the day they can see all the way up to the bumper. But I'm also surprised how much I like the backup camera in my 4th gen Limited.
The center diff is great for snowy roads, and handling is much more neutral with it unlocked. The V8 is good, too, but the 5th gen V6 has more power than the 4th V8. Not as much torque, but more efficiency. The next gen 4runner will probably get something like the Tacoma 3.5L V6. If you want V8 get a GX460.

Modern day emission regulations I would suppose.
As we age we fall out of the "target" market for automobiles....most of those perceptions are formed pretty early on in life like early teens.
As a GenXer the world marketed to me for about five seconds...so we have the high end luxury that is aimed towards the boomers and now the new stuff aimed at the
millennial....You know kids that did not see "silver" stereo equipment the first time around!
Love my V8 AWD Limited so much, I bought a commuter car to cut down on the intown wear and tear! So every couple of days when I get in the truck it feels brand new

To help to keep a point of differentiation between the 4Runner and the Sequoia would be my bet. The Sequoia is bigger, yes, but that gap is narrowing. The V8 is one of the clear differences between the two trucks.

Only technically, not in the casual sense of word in the typical range of driving conditions.
There is a definite difference in feel and real world performance that reverses the quote.
(Crossing fingers I don't regret this).
I had a Brand new 2016 as a rental and I didn't care for it to much. I missed the nimble feeling of my 06 and the hood seemed to be to wide for such a narrow windshield. I guess I could get used to one if I had to but if any thing happened to my current truck I would be looking for an 09 first.

Those mirrors are one of the details that really impressed me about the 4R. Anyone parked next to a van or SUV has the issue of how to tell whether anything's coming. The mirrors are a simple but brilliant solution.
Apparently the JBL-equipped models have speakers instead. IMO the mirrors are far more useful than a couple of tweeters. Wouldn't mind having that factory sub installation though.

Back on topic, I haven't been in a 5th gen and maybe it's shallow, but I never even considered a 5th gen considering the price diff between a '10 model or later vs. a 4th gen and the 5th gen's looks.

In 2008 i traded my 03 Sorento in on a 08 v6 2wd SR5 DSRP $31,832/ the sale price was $25,751 I got $7,000 for my Sorento this left $18,751 they added a $249 processing&customer Benefit Package what ever that was. so i ended up paying $19,000 for it. As of today i have 5743 miles on it. It's been a dream to drive when i drive it. And have had no problems except needing a new battery three years ago and one tire got road damage and had to be replaced at $135. Have had some jerks key the paint a few times when parked at the Mall or at Best Buy, other then that it looks new as i keep it in the garage when it's home and is never left outside.

I have 112k miles and will never buy a 5th gen, if I sell my 4th gen it will be for a tundra most likely.
As for the V8 I am pretty sure that the reason ALL manufacturers are making smaller engines is simple, fuel efficiency, less cylinders, less gas used. This whole country is so concerned with emissions that it trumps everything else, especially power. Hence the reason why electrics are still on the uptake and why so many cars are I4 with electric motors.
As for 5th gen having more power:
4th gen v8 vvti: 260 hp and 306 lb-ft torque
5th gen v6: 270 hp and 278 lb-ft torque
Torque = Power

V8 and I think the 4th Gen still looks better then 5th's.
Doesn't matter whether 5th or 6th gen - I don't anticipate getting ride of mine any time soon unless a V8 is reintroduced to the 4Runner line....
