Limited Without Sunroof

I've done a lot of searching on this website. I found from this searching that a Limited 4Runner could be had in prior generations of the 4Runner. But I cannot find if a Limited can be ordered in the current generation without a sunroof. I'm too tall to fit in one with a sunroof - way too tall.

I've sat in an SR5 without a sunroof and fit fine. But with a sunroof, my head hits the headliner edge right at the transition between the glass and the headliner. And that's with the seat as far back as I can tolerate it. This issue is why I've been driving an FJ Cruiser for many years.

Does anyone have a knowledgeable dealer that will actually get on the phone and try to order a Limited without a sunroof in-lieu-of all the people and dealers that say "just try the corporate website - if you can't do it there, it can't be done" beause that is not necessarily true and I'm tired of dealing with people that won't even try. I have placed a few calls locally, and have not found anyone willing to try for me.

Also, it would be nice to see if anyone here actually owns an example of what I'm looking for. I want the full time 4WD, and only the Limited has that option.

Thanks. :thumb3:

Just called a friend of mine that owns a few Toyota dealerships. He will check for me and get back this afternoon. To my knowledge it has not been done.

Thank you. I don't fit in much. For me, finding a vehicle is like finding shoes - nearly impossible. My FJ Cruiser is wearing out, and after all my years of back injuries, I'm needing to have a more comfortable ride.

Why full time 4WD if I may ask? I live in an extremely snowy area and even in 2WD (like going from dry to slick roads) the VSC kicks in and keeps you going in your pointed direction.

Well maybe you can get a TRD Pro those dont have a sunroof. but then again its more expensive and not sure what ur deating needs are.

he said limited so he obviously wanted the luxury interior trim and all full time 4x4... neither of which come in the Pro

2014 LE come standard with moon roof from the factory (japan).

no way around this.

Headroom Front Row :

2014 GX460 - 38
2014 Sequoia - 34.8
2014 Land Cruiser / Lexus LX570 - 38.3

2014 4Runner - 39.3 w/o moonroof (38.6 with moon roof)

so no matter which vehicle you want to swap to, they have even less room than a 4runner with a moon roof

Hi big...

I'm not sure if you can order a 'limited' w/o a sunroof however, I believe you can 'have the sunroof removed' by an independent sunroof company. I know that most sunroof shops will specialize in 'Headliner replacement'. They also do sell/install non-motorized sunroofs; just a 'hinged' glass panel that can be opened 'manually', and has no slide tracks. Once the tracks are removed, you'll regain the original cabin height. Call around your area to see what they can do for you; they may even buy your 'new' Toyota factory sunroof from you!

PS: Just out of pure curiosity... "Does your (real) first name happen to be 'Shaquille'?" ...just asking :noidea:

lol! rigtec, cheers hahaha!

Hope it works out for you. In your situation, I'd really consider the TE (or SR5 if I couldn't get a TE without sunroof) and add leather at a high end upholstery shop. The full time 4wd is not as necessary as you may feel. I know having it is nice, but at your height... you don't have lots of options.

My guys says no with a caveat: To paraphrase: "Physically its possible to build a LE without a sunroof. Realistically it is not going to happen." This is not from a salesman but an owner. Good luck

Why full time 4WD if I may ask? I live in an extremely snowy area and even in 2WD (like going from dry to slick roads) the VSC kicks in and keeps you going in your pointed direction.

I recently sold our AWD 2004 Toyota Sienna. It was real nice. Had a real transfer case (although high gear only) and had full time 4WD with a 50%/50% power split front vs. back but could vary up to 30%/70% in either direction depending upon road conditions.

I know the VSC works good. But I drive a lot for work and in a major freeze thaw zone of the US. We always have combinations of slush, wet pavement, hard packed snow patches, and snow - all on the roads at the same time.

I need to be able to accelerate and steer out of the way of the many crazies that I encounter swerving all over the road. VSC cuts the engine power and I can't reliably react how I want to in an emergency in my FJ. Mine is an '08 which is prior to when the VSC disable button was added. But also, even if I could disable VSC (as I test drove a newer one in slush that could disable VSC), there is still another electronic nanny active and I just can't get the power down to the ground the way I need to be able to. Especially starting from a stop on icy up-slopes.

I may have to settle for a part time 4WD again when I replace my FJ, but the '04 Sienna spoiled me and I miss that. 2010 Sienna was the last year of the full time 4WD Sienna. In 2011, it went to a spin first, clutch activated system that just doesn't work as well in the road conditions I'm always in. The other problem with the 2011+ Sienna is the seat thicknesses were reduced by over 50%. I sat in one less than 30 seconds and had to get out. With my back and height combined, I'm VERY limited. My wife and I shopped hard earlier this year to find a certified used low mileage 2010 Sienna to replace our thoroughly worn out '04 model. We settled on a FWD one because it's all we could find. So, I really want to regain at least one family vehicle with full time 4WD.

And I can't delay my travel. I'm the only engineer where I work, in charge of about 200 projects. When a loan closing has to happen, followed by a preconstruction conference, before bids expire, I have to get there - period. I have no backup person to cover me. Many times this happens on the last legal day possible to get a project going without bids expiring.

I wish I didn't have to think so much about all of this. Life could be so much more simple.

Agreed. It appears a compromise is in my future...

I understand. Unfortunately VSC in any 4WD 4Runner (including the LE) will not allow you to do what you are describing whether it is full or part time 4WD. If it is slick you would have it in 4WD right? So there would be no difference between the two. If it were dry or just wet you would have it in 2WD right? I can't imagine 4WD performing much worse than 2WD in that situation.

Bottom line you cannot get the LE without a sunroof. Now you have to make a choice. Oh, while your job sounds important and you have to be places I also have to be places for my job too. As a matter of fact most of the guys reading this depend on their vehicle to get them to places just like you.

Holding the trac button down for 3 seconds with the vehicle completely stopped disables TRAC & VSC

to add to 1E, to resolve my issues of crazies in the morning, I just get on the road at 5:30 or 6am to fresh powder driving out to base before everyone else wakes up and grinds the snow into a frozen slick covering.

its a hell of a lot more fun running in 6" of fresh untouched snow than what you get 2hrs later when everyone else is putzing along at 25-35mph.

now about 2 winters ago where I am doing about 60-70 and hit a finger/pillow drift in the left lane, and start fish tailing, let off the gas, ever so slight correction and all is good, but ended up losing about 20-30 mph from that slight incident and a tight sphincter.

when that happened, I had the nannys turned off (locked center, no vsc). now I do turn off the nannys in the 4runner, but its selective depending on situation. if the road report says yellow/red then I turn it completely off before leaving the house, otherwise I do the temp disengage.

and this past winter we had a awesome blizzard. it was so bad, I had to use the rumble strips on the shoulder cause we couldn't see the road at all. sucked doing 5-10 mph for 15 miles and losing a few fillings to even get to work.

Years ago I lived in Ohio. I had a full size Bronco with part time 4x4. I remember many times taking off when the ice/snow was spotty. If you did not notice the ice then it spun like crazy in 2 wheel drive, after 10 feet or whatever it would be dry and all was back to normal. It was a pain putting it in 4x4 constantly and trying to guess when it was needed. Same is true taking off from a gravel road onto a paved road. With full time 4x4 you do not even have to think about it, it is always ready. Wives especially like it because they do not want to fool with putting it in 4x4 then remembering to take it back out. This is one reason the Limited was my only choice.
