Could be a bad idler pulley, my 3rz sounded similar when the bearing went out on the A/C idler. 25 dollar part
 
When you turn on your a/c it increases your rpms so naturally it will get louder. You have a 5speed correct? I would play with your clutch push it in and raise rpms. Do you still hear it? I have the 3.4 but makes the same exact noise and I found its clutch related. Probably a bad throw out bearing or something, for me at least.
 
The clutch doesn't seem to have any affect on the noise. It's loud in neutral but gets really bad as rpms increase regardless of whether the clutch is engaged.

Have you checked your power steering components? Mine started doing the same thing last week. its a v6 though. but this morning when i went to start it, the power steering didnt kick on for about 5 seconds after it started. when it came on, the whine followed. could it be power steering even if it doesnt change with wheel rotation? I'm totally thread jacking here
 
Happened yo me last week. Had 2 idler pulleys go bad and it was covered under warranty. I think when I was playing in some muddy water it got I'm there
 
Yup. I think that pulley was under mud water last week. That would explain it. Any ideas on how to "mud-proof" a ye ye yota?
